Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
I'm in the process of replacing my Internet-PC and took the opportunity to purchase 2 monitors with a higher resolution. I wanted to attach two PCs to two monitors each as I did with the old monitors because I naively assumed it would work the same way as it did with the old ones, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I suppsoe I have to invest some thoughts about that.
The transfer of my email profile of Thunderbird also doesn't work the way it's described in the internet. Unfortunately Thunderbird doesn't have an import/export function. Let's see how I can I solve this challenge.

Well, at least I was able to overcome the challenge with my email-client.

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
The challenge with the two monitors is solved by now .
It's quite astonishing how much faster some software (e.g. browser) work on the new PC. It seems it was quite time to replace the old PC.
It's amazing how much time you save if you take the time to research. I wanted to create hyperlinks from a table of lists consisting of several parts. I used Excel for that, but didn't know the syntax for doing it directly there, so I had to include several steps with other software which was time-consuming.

It sounds incredibly time-consuming, Wolfgang, not to mention complicated! I wouldn't know where to start with things like that. Good luck with any further tasks/challenges!

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
I'm currently offline at home as my computer seems to have reached the end of the road. A few days ago I switched it on only to get a message saying "This site is not private - Return to safety"!
I could do absolutely nothing with it as it refused to open any website. In the address bar at the top it was showing something called Restricted showmy bill.com! I have never heard of it. It also aid there was no internet connection and my iphone was refusing to accept the wifi either.
Anyway I ended up resetting the computer according to instructions I found using the phone but that has only made things worse as now all the apps etc have disappeared so the only thing I can now see is the same message telling me the site is not private and I am in danger.
Does anyone know if this is something my ISP can sort out or has the computer itself been hacked and I need a new one? I'm currently reduced to using the library as I find it irksome to type any kind of lengthy message etc on the phone's tiny screen.

I’m sorry to hear about your computer problems, John. I wish I could offer some advice, but my knowledge of such matters is severely limited. I do hope you manage to get things sorted out and quickly.

I'm sorry to hear about your computer problems too, John. I know very little about things like that but I hope you can get things sorted out soon.

Hope you get it sorted John, and that it's not too serious. We have a couple of good computer shops around here that sort out problems, but unfortunately that's probably not a lot of help to you.

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
It rather sounds like your computer has an infection than a general PC-problem. What you can try is this: Several antivirus/Security companies offer bootable ISO-images of emergency-CDs which allows internet connection without taking care of the actual settings of the PC. These emergency disks (you have to burn those iso-files on CD) als check for virus files and other malware.Lucky Star wrote:I'm currently offline at home as my computer seems to have reached the end of the road. Another option is trying a Linux based live system like Ubuntu to check if your PC is working. It alkso checks internet connections. You'd also have to burn the files first on DVD before starting them, so you should ask someone to do this for you, if you don't have another PC to do it, John.

I'd take it to an IT specialist, John. We have used a local man 2 or 3 times in the past, and he has always performed a miracle!

Re: Computer Upgrades, Issues and Conventions
I had finally decided to take the next step using modern technologies, buying a smartphone (of which the producer claims it'll keep it up-to-date for a long time so I can hopefully use it for several years) and ordering an internet tariff. Everything arrived until yesterday and I intended to setup and adjust everything today. The first challenge: the sim-card they delivered isn't supported by my smartphone . So I have ordered a replacement card (chargeable) which supports the right format. Learning by doing, by errors and by pain...

I finally took the time to and wanted to install the 2 4TB-drives I had bought second-hand. Removing the 500GB- and 1TB-drive was okay, connecting the two drives as well. Then I checked the drives vor errors, and unfortunately it told me that one drive was faulty . So I uninstalled it and inserted the old 1TB-drive again. At least I have 3,5TB additional space now to make some experiements.

I'm still wondering why it is that 90% of my email notifications from EBS go straight to my junk folder. Every day I have to click on them to say 'not junk; so they can go to my inbox and I can open them and click on the link. Its a rigmarole. Sure, I can soon go on EBS and look at posts, but I'm puzzled as to why notifications for EBS go straight to junk, while notifications for other websites never do!

Typical, isn't it? The stuff you want to read is marked as junk while the utter tripe you don't want lands smack into your inbox!
I've just bought myself a new laptop (AGAIN!) as mine died all of a sudden and couldn't be fixed. They did remove my hard drive though so I was able to recover all my files.

Incredible isn’t it? All my emails from Brighton and Hove Council go straight into my spam folder, whereas real spam emails arrive in my inbox.
