Well done, Tony. It's a pity you couldn't influence the book's cover.

What are you moaning about - you must acknowledge it's much better than a Maxey full frontal!John Pickup wrote:Well done, Tony. It's a pity you couldn't influence the book's cover.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I don't influence anything in any way and I am certainly not paid for anything I do for Hodder, I simply check things out if I am asked. I did actually suggest many of the stories for the last two Christmas books (that is why stories like 'Pantomime Wolf' got in), but I don't think I had much to do with the latest one unless some of my suggestions were left over.

Well, they definitely have stories with pounds shillings and pence, as I said! I presume these were stories you suggested.

Are the stories in these books available in any of the original books (The Christmas Book would be my educated guess!) or are they only in the modern ones? I refuse point blank to buy a modern edition and support them by contributing to their sales, but I really would like to get the stories if possible.

I feel exactly the same as you.
But, I've now bought all three Christmas Books. I'm really, really enjoying them. You won't regret it!

They are mostly available (though I think some are uncollected until they were put into these compilations) but they are spread across a wide range of books - the Gay, Bright, Happy storybooks, the Flower books, the Bedside books, and other books too. Saying that though, there aren't that many in the collections that I remember reading before - maybe about a third of them in the two books I have.
The first book in the trio of Christmas Collections is mainly 'The Christmas Book' - but heavily abridged.

Thank you Rob . I have all the Gay, Bright, Happy, Flower and Bedside books so it's possible I already have some of the stories already!

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Further to my receiving the Magazine Annual No 3 for Christmas I bought a lovely copy of the Magazine Annual No 2 off ebay which arrived today. I already had No 4 but a decent copy of No 1 is proving elusive.
I like these annuals as they contain short stories of the Famous Five and Secret Seven which I wouldn't otherwise have seen.

Here is a 1st Magazine Annual book with a dw:

The wrapper doesn't look too bad, it seems to be the hardest of them to find in a decent dw.

Thanks, Ice Maiden. I'll wait and see if I can find one with a better wrapper.

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
It's my birthday in a week's time, so my dad asked me what I wanted. What do you but the person who has everything? (lol!) Answer - an Enid Blyton book!!
So I went on eBay and immediately found The Seventh Bedside Book - first edition, complete with a very good dust wrapper for £15 'buy it now' price. These books are so hard to find - I only have about six of them and only one with a dust wrapper - don't have number 7 in any shape or form - so I couldn't resist!
