Thank you, Rob. I don’t blame you if you are greedy because they seem delicious.Rob Houghton wrote:They can be eaten any time, but most often around Christmas. There's a superstition that you should eat one mince pie on each of the twelve days of Christmas - starting Christmas Day, to bring luck during the following year!
I like all of them - Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies and stollen - but I'm just greedy!

Yes Rob - I didn't realise they were so expensive. I will have to put £5 of diesel in the car and spend £25 on the cake!
Maybe I could start a gofundme for the cake tasting!
How many here will make or buy a Christmas cake this year?

Re: Best Mince Pies 2017??
We make sausage rolls and mince pies to offer when people drop in for coffee or tea - or sherry - sadly never did take to either myself.... We've made Christmas cakes for more years than I care to remember, from Delia Smith's Christmas, the household Bible throughout the festive season, there's a good choice of cakes from one you can whip up on 24/12 to the more elaborate that get "fed" with brandy from October onwards. This year's is the classic fruit cake, wrapped in brown paper and foil. They're all fun to do and I should think probably quite a lot cheaper than supermarket varieties, likewise xmas puddings?

Re: Best Mince Pies 2017??
I have a small question: Does anyone know a good recipie for mincemeat (so that I can make Mince Pies) if possible without suet?
I can't buy mincemeat in Switzerland so I intend to some myself. Thanks for your help. I hope my question is in the right thread, if not, but it to the right one or just answer with a pm. Thanks a lot!!

Looking at this thread it has just occurred to me that I will be without a homemade Christmas cake this year. Every year for the last thirty years my neighbour across the road made me a wonderful Christmas cake, but sadly she died a few weeks ago. I will also miss the super Christmas Meals that she sent across to me on Christmas Day.

My wife manages a care home and always has to work on Christmas Day and over New Year too so I do sympathise Tony.
We have a proper meal together after Christmas and New Year, but often on Christmas day I have to fend for myself. Luckily, there are products available that take some of the stress of cooking away from me:

I always cook a Christmas dinner for me and my dad. Christmas isn't as special as it used to be when my mom was alive, and we would have parties and guests round. We rarely do that now.

Re: Best Mince Pies 2017??
I've been trusted to bake the family's Christmas cake this year, a task which I am very honoured to have been given! Usually we rely on the baking expertise of my Nana, but I've been baking a lot more this year and she's suggested that I do my own. It's daunting because everyone in my family absolutely loves Christmas cake so if it goes wrong, they're all going to be quite annoyed with me!! My baking usually goes one of two ways: either in the bin or, sometimes I surprise myself and I concoct something delicious!!
