A very fair observation which I along with many (or stretching it two or three others) heartily endorse.
What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?

Growing up in the 1970's (I was born 31 January 1968), along with flares, black and white TV (I adored the TV Famous Five at the time too - not seen since though - must rectify that at some point!), space hoppers sherbet-dip etc, Betty Maxsey's versions WERE The Famous Five to me, nostalgia eh? Ouch those flares though...

Betty Maxey has no better champion than Pete! I must try and find my paperback copies hidden in the room 'that no one can enter' and see if I have got copy. Could be a long job and I might never come out again.

A bargain, Nigel.

Received a lovely copy of 'the Twins Go To Nursery-Rhyme Land' today from a friend - very pleased with it - a beautiful addition to my collection, as its a book I've never seen in real life before.
Also received 'Tales of Betsy May' - which I bought from eBay - only £3 with a good dust wrapper. Its a book I only had in paperback before.

Well done O'Malley, I wondered if anyone here had got the five/six minute/o'clock tales! I really like those, lovely looking little books, especially in their wrappers
Same with the Besty May book, glad you got it Rob!
My Secret Sevens turned up, all in very nice wrappers which I'm pleased about as I'd gone off the descriptions only (the only bad thing about Abebooks is so many sellers don't put pictures). Completed the set at last! The Sixth Holiday book wrapper wasn't nearly as bad as I thought and has repaired up nicely .

I bought a near mint paperback copy of Five Go Adventuring Again in a charity shop in Burgess Hill this morningl for 40p, complete with Betty Maxey illustrations. Ah, well, that's the only downside of this purchase, Pete.

Great bargain Eddie. I really don't understand why Maxey's covers were so evocative and her internal drawings so... meh! Perhaps that was the brief she had from the publishers?

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
The problem with Maxey's internal drawings is that their totally flat and too busy. There's no depth whatsoever, they look see through, like an unfinished outline rather than a proper drawing. On top of that, there's too many lines, things look like they've merged into each other and you can't tell where on part finishes and another begins. It's quite a unique talent in a way - to be able to make something overdone and underdone at the same time .

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Yes - when people say 'Betty Maxey' - I always think of her cover illustrations, which were full of atmosphere and always looked very inviting to me, when I sneakily looked at my sister's Famous Five collection. The cover above, in particular, looks exciting and quit adult. I never really noticed her internal illustrations much until everyone started talking about them on here, which speaks volumes!
