Re: Pointless Registration
I think that, if I were to be so modern as to get a mobile phone at all, it would probably be the size of a suitcase and have a rotary dial on it!

Re: Pointless Registration
Very retro! I've seen a few 'celebs' in magazines who have a traditional phone receiver, complete with curly wire which they attach to their mobile phone.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Re: Pointless Registration
Have you thought of some kind of a software that can do the necessary eliminations for you?
Probably the software can look into files containing the details of the participants, and check when they made last response. If the response was over a year back, the software can just run the delete command...
I think this is something that can be done.

Re: Pointless Registration
It would be better if the software (if available and if reliable) checked when people had last logged in. Some people never respond on the forums, as they wish to read and follow particular threads but not post. They only register in order to make use of certain features, e.g. seeing new posts highlighted. But our webmaster has a problem in that the forums are set up differently from the rest of the website and he doesn't have the same degree of control over them, so he doesn't like to fiddle with things too much.

Re: Pointless Registration
Can't we just delete them if they don't post within a few weeks of joining?

In April 2011 Tony Summerfield wrote:I can think of plenty of better things to do than removing about two thousand people and I am sure that Anita would concur!
Just to put this into perspective, the forums are set up in such a way that I would have to go in and out of admin all the time, check someone out to see when they last posted, delete them and then be asked 'are you sure you want to do this' - a minimum of two minutes a person, which would mean about 65 hours of non-stop uninterrupted work!!!!!!

A-ha!
Perhaps they forget the website address, or something like that?

Re: Pointless Registration
The forum I run has managed to solve this problem. If a new registree (is that a word?) doesn't post in, I think, six weeks, the account is deleted.

Re: Pointless Registration
But that wouldn't solve the problem with people having posted and losing interest after some time - or creating a new account because they can't no longer access their old one (think of Yak/Moose or Peppermint Peppy).

True. However, looking at our member list, 0 posters seem to take up the lion's share. Any lapsed posters would always need to be removed manually, the time since last posted would be agreed by the admin team. The admin team can also reset the password, so a new account isn't necessary.
