I agree. It does seem strange, but then again the illustration is awful for overlaying any kind of writing, as can be seen above - the signature would have completely disappeared amongst the background!

Looking at the bottle of pop, there appears to be a bit of product placement going on!

Here's a much larger version of the book's cover - what else can our eagle eyed correspondents spot on this intriguing cover??

Here's a little more info on the range of work Roger Payne illustrated in his career:

If you really want a bigger image, Pete, I have stuck it on our own website, but it won't stay this size for long so make the most of it!!

I have looked, but the label seems blank to me...Unless there's another bottle somewhere.

Without my specs,I'm guessing it may be a Bordeaux or a Claret?

Strange Ruby was the first book I ever borrowed from the library that was brand new when I took it out back in the 60's. I can still remember the librarian stamping the return date in it. For that reason, I've always liked this book and I'm looking forward to reading Rob's article on it.

I didn't realise Strange Ruby was so popular! :-)

I just meant the way the bottle is placed in the foreground - as if we're supposed to pay particular attention to it.

I posted out Journal 60 this morning, so it should arrive sometime in the next few days. Slightly later than I intended as it has been at the printers for the the best part of three weeks. It is a bit earlier than usual as I had run out of Journal 59.

Interestingly for new members it was our best May for 7 years, but this has been followed by our worst June for 16 years - swings and roundabouts! More interesting is that in the four months since I raised the overseas subscriptions we have had just one new member from overseas and this compares with 34 new members from the UK. Much as I feared I seem to have priced overseas members out of the market and all I did was to raise the subscription to cover our costs instead of selling all overseas Journals at a loss, c'est la vie!

Looking forward to receiving the new Journal.

At least with 34 new members from the UK this sounds good, Tony, so I wouldn't get too disheartened. :)

Great to hear about the 34 new members, Tony. I'm really looking forward to receiving Journal 60. It's what's needed to brighten up a dull July day. :D
