Can we unearth twenty stalwart characters/illustrators in the books?

Which characters come to mind in Enid's books when you think of someone who is a 'stalwart'?

Image
1. Andy from The Adventurous Four. An honest, hard working likable character.
Great in a crisis and not afraid to give strong orders to the others without being dictatorial or offensive.

Image
2. Barney from The Mystery Books. dependable, honest, trustworthy, a loyal friend, generous, strong and kindly.

Who comes into your mind when you think of a stalwart character in the books??
Did you know?
Sometime in the 15th century, English speakers began to use stalwart in place of the older form stalworth. Although stalworth is now archaic, it laid the groundwork for today's meaning of stalwart. During the 12th century, forms of stalworth began to be used to describe strongly built people or animals (a meaning stalwart carries).

It also came to be used as an adjective for people who showed bravery or courage (likewise a meaning passed on to stalwart). So, in a way, stalwart has been serviceable in keeping the spirit of stalworth alive. This character of stalwart is true to its roots. Stalworth came from the Old English word stǣlwierthe (meaning "serviceable"), which, in turn, is thought to come from terms meaning "foundation" and "worth."

6.Champ Charlie: ‘Yes. But I haven’t,’ said Daisy. ‘Look. Let’s go in here—where that clown is calling out
something about boxing. If it’s clowns boxing, it ought to be funny.’
It wasn’t. It was merely a boxing-ring into which anyone could step to box with a stalwart
youngster called Champ Charlie.
Daisy was not in the least interested in boxing and Fatty took
her out again, laughing at the clown’s antics as he did so.

If we're including series regulars like Andy and Barney, then I'd definitely include Julian from the Famous Five. The way Enid and the others describe him - 'a grown up Julian, a determined Julian' etc, and the way they look up to him and follow his lead - he certainly seems a stalwart character.

I'd also suggest Jack from the Secret series, although that's very much just based on Secret Island, really. Where he's very much the Andy equivalent. As the series develops, it becomes a rare one where there's a lot more adults involved in the adventures (as far as I remember, anyway - I seldom read Secret Mountain or Secret of Killimooin anymore).

Chief Inspector Jenks should be included. In fact, there must be dozens of characters who could fit this description. They would certainly outweigh the villainous/weak characters.

If we are including illustrators then Stuart Tresilian must be in there. His fabulous pictures brought Enid's greatest series vividly to life.

Like John, I'd include Stuart Tresilian as he went above and beyond when it came to bringing every detail of the Adventure books to life. He obviously gave a great deal of thought to perspective and composition, whether producing sweeping scenes or little vignettes of Kiki, and his pictures capture the spirt and atmosphere of the stories perfectly. His illustrations are true works of art and the high quality is maintained throughout the series. Definitely dedicated and dependable!

I agree about Stuart Tresillian. My favourite illustration of his is where he depicts the four children beside the blocked pass in Valley of Adventure. The children are mere dots beside the colossal boulders and shows the pass towering above them, completely impassable.
Stalwart characters must include Miss Pepper. She was the person who orchestrated the meeting between Barney and his father.

I'd count Miss Grayling as a stalwart character, devoting her life to turning out "good, sound women the world can lean on."

And what about Mr. Pink-Whistle, who "goes about the world putting wrong things right"?
