The abilities of Frederick Algernon Trotteville

Post by pete9012S »

Can you think of the many things Fatty excels at and give examples from the books?

Excels at winter sports, skiing etc:

The Mystery Of Tally Ho Cottage

‘Tell us about Switzerland,’ said Bets. ‘Did you really fall down much?’
It appeared that, far from falling down even once, Fatty had done
extremely well in all forms of winter sport, and had carried off quite a few
prizes. He tried to talk about them modestly, but, being Fatty, this was very
difficult.

‘Still the same old Fatty,’ said Larry, after about twenty minutes of
listening to Fatty’s exploits. ‘The Wonder Boy! Can’t put a foot wrong even
on skis!’

Good, but not in Fatty's league!

I imagine Fatty would even go down the infamous Lost Valley in Val-d'Isère on skis rather like this chap!!

Bruising. I don't have a copy of the book on hand to quote from, unfortunately, but it's a fairly significant part of the plot of Burnt Cottage. :D ;)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

BOXING:

Image

The Mystery Of The Hidden House:
“Shut up, Pip,” said Fatty. “You can’t even box. You ought to learn boxing at school like I
do. You should just see me box! Why, last term I fought a chap twice my size, and in five
minutes I . . .”

“Had him flat on his back!” finished Larry, “with a couple of black eyes and a squashed
ear.”
Fatty looked surprised. “How do you know?” he said. “Have I told you before?”
“No, but your stories always end in some way like that,” grinned Larry.
Banshee Towers
(Is this the only mention of Fatty having cousins?)
You know, Fatty, solving mysteries can be quite hard work.”
“Well, I’m rather inclined to agree with you,” said Fatty, lazily. “You know, I’ve just been
staying with two cousins—both first-class footballers—first-class boxers—first-class cross-country
runners—and first-class bores, to tell you the truth! My word, the excuses I had to
think of to get out of kicking a football from morning to night—running for miles in shorts
uphill and down—and putting on boxing-gloves and having sparring bouts. Thank goodness
that didn’t last long—the sparring, I mean.”

“Why—were you knocked out?” asked Larry.
“Knocked out! Don’t be fatheaded,” said Fatty. “The tiring part about the boxing was that
I kept on doing the knocking-out—I tell you, it got boring!”

“You’re boasting, Fatty,” said Larry. “Ha—you’ll never get rid of that habit! That’s one
thing you do better than any of us—boast! You’re superlative at that!”
“Don’t be rude, Larry!” said Daisy, shocked. “Why, Fatty might knock you out, if you talk
like that!”

“No, I shan’t,” said Fatty. “Larry’s quite right. I do boast just a bit. On the other hand, I do
actually do what I boast about. I really did knock out my two cousins.
I’ll show you the blow I
used. You swing out like this with your left, and then—ooh, sorry, Buster! What on earth
made you get in the way? Did I hurt you?”
“Funny—you didn’t even knock him out,” said Larry irritatingly.
" A kind heart always brings its own reward," said Mrs. Lee.

TENNIS:

THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING MAN:
‘Well—I can’t see much difference,’ said Pip, at last. ‘Anyway—why ever are you
slimming, Fatty? I thought you liked eating.’
‘Oh, I do, I do,’ said Fatty. ‘But the school captain wants me to be in the First Tennis Team
next term—
and I don’t fancy hurling myself about the court in boiling hot weather if I weigh
about eleven stone.’

‘I didn’t know you were so good at tennis,’ said Larry, astonished.
‘Neither did I,’ said Fatty, modestly. ‘But I was just fooling about with a racquet and balls
on a hard tennis court one sunny day last term, and old Dickory Dock—that’s our head-boy—
came up and—er—well—I hardly like to go on.’

‘You needn’t,’ said Larry. ‘It seems a funny thing to me how many people think you’re a
Wonder at this, that and the other. Here I’ve been training myself at school for terms on end,
trying to get into the football team or the cricket, or even the swimming, and I can’t. And you
just fool about somewhere and along comes the Head or the Captain or some big noise . . .’
‘And says, “Trotteville, you’re the world’s marvel. Do us the honour of belonging to the
First Tennis Team,” ’ finished Pip. ‘It’s not really fair. And you’re always top of your form—
and I’m never higher than ninth, and I have to slog like anything to get there—and you never
seem to do any work at all. Gosh, Fatty, if I didn’t like you as much as I do I’d loathe you.’

Fatty laughed, and helped himself to a bun. Then he sobered down and looked thoughtful.
‘It’s not going to be funny, though, this tennis business,’ he said. ‘I’ve sworn to get my weight
down these hols. I can smash the balls over the net all right, and place them as cunningly as
the next man—and I can take a cannon-ball service without blinking an eyelid—but it’s this
running about the court that gets me. I puff like a grampus.’

The Mystery Of The Burnt Cottage:
Fatty looked important. He produced an
enormous sheet of paper on which he had drawn the right and left footprint,
life-size, with all its criss-cross markings on the rubber sole. It was really very
good.
The others stared at it. “Not bad, is it?” said Fatty, swelling up with
importance, and, as usual, making a bad impression on the others by boasting.
“Didn’t I tell you I was good at drawing?”
“Bets is right,” said Fatty. “The squares in the pattern of the rubber sole are
not quite so big as in my drawing. And I know my drawing is quite correct,
because I measured everything carefully. I’m awfully good at things like that. I
never make . . .”

POETRY

Image
TALLY HO COTTAGE:
‘A pore old woman had a dog,
And it was always barkin,
Its name was Poppet, and of course
The woman’s name was Larkin.
She sniffed and coughed the whole day long,
And said the wind was nippin,
And when the dog got in her way
She handed out a whippin.
Her husband shuffled in an out,
He wasn’t very supple,
They weren’t at all what you might call
A really pleasant couple!’

The Mystery Of The Hidden House

In this book, although Daisy declares:
“Ern and his pomes and portry!” giggled Daisy. “I wish I could get hold of that portry
book—I’d write a poem in it that would make Old Clear-Orf sit up!”

“Quite an idea!” said Fatty, and put it away in his mind for future use.
It's Fatty as usual that steals the show:
“Well—you never know,” said Fatty, trying to look modest. “I remember having to write a
poem—er, I mean pome—for class one day, and forgetting all about it till the master pounced
on me and asked for mine. I looked in my desk, but of course it wasn’t there because I had
forgotten to write one. So I just said ‘Sorry, sir, it seems to be mislaid—but I’ll recite it if you
like.’ And I stood up and recited six verses straight off out of my head. What’s more, I got top
marks for it.”

“I don’t believe you,” said Pip.
“Well, I’ll recite it for you now if you like,” said Fatty, indignantly, but the others wouldn’t
let him.
“There’s a mystery a-moving
Away on Christmas Hill,
Where kidnappers and robbers
Are waiting for the kill.
But when kidnappers are napping
And robbers are asleep,
We’ll pounce on them together
And knock them in a heap!”
He began to write. As usual the words flowed out straight away. No puzzling his brains for
Fatty, no searching for a rhyme! It just came out like water from a tap.

TO MY DEAR UNCLE
“Oh how I love thee, Uncle dear,
Although thine eyes like frogs’ appear,
Thy body is so fat and round,
Thy heavy footsteps shake the ground.
Thy temper is so sweet and mild
’Twould frighten e’en the smallest child.
And when thou speakest, people say,
‘Now did we hear a donkey bray?’
Dear Uncle, how . . .”

BANSHEE TOWERS

And who could possibly ever forget:

Image
“Well—it’s your pome, isn’t it?” said Fatty cheerfully. “I mean—I only just went on with
it. I think you work too hard at your pomes, Ern. You just want to throw them off, so to speak.
Like this—
“The little Princess Bongawee
Was very small and sweet,
A princess from her pretty head
Down to her tiny feet.
She had a servant, Ern by name,
A very stout young fella,
Who simply loved to shield her with
A dazzling . . .”
“STATE UMBRELLA!
” yelled every one, except Ern. There were more yells and laughs. Ern
didn’t join in. He simply couldn’t understand how Fatty could be so clever. Fatty gave him a
thump.

He can disguise his handwriting well.
“Here—give it to me. I’ll do it,” said Fatty, who was apparently able to disguise his writing as easily as he could disguise his appearance and his voice. He took the envelope, and, to the children’s enormous admiration, wrote Gladys’s name and Pip’s address in a small, extremely grown-up handwriting, quite unlike his own.
“There you are,” he said. “Elementary, my dear Pip!”
“Marvellous, Mr. Sherlock Holmes!” said Pip. “Honestly, Fatty, you’re a wonder. How many different writings can you do?”
“Any amount,” said Fatty. “Want to see the writing of a poor old charwoman? Here it is!”
He wrote a few words in a scrawling, untidy writing. “Oh, it’s just like Mrs. Cockles’s writing!” cried Bets in delight. “Sometimes she puts out a notice for the milkman—‘TWO PINTS’ or something like that—and her writing is just like that!”
“Now write like old Clear-Orf,” said Larry. “Go on! What does he write like?”
“Well, I’ve seen his writing, so I know what it’s like,” said Fatty, “but if I hadn’t seen it I’d know too—he’d be bound to write like this—”
He wrote a sentence or two in large, flourishing hand with loops and tails to the letters—an untidy, would-be impressive hand—yes, just like Mr. Goon’s writing.
“Fatty, you’re always doing something surprising,” said Bets, with a sigh. “There’s nothing you can’t do. I wish I was like you.”
“You be like yourself. You couldn’t be nicer,” said Fatty, giving the little girl a squeeze. Bets was pleased. She liked and admired Fatty very much indeed.
“You know, once last term I thought I’d try out a new handwriting on my form-master,” said Fatty. “So I made up a marvellous handwriting, very small and neat and pointed, with most of the letters leaning backwards—and old Tubbs wouldn’t pass it—said I’d got some one to do that prep for me, and made me do it all again.”
“Poor Fatty,” said Bets.
“Well, the next time I gave my prep in, it was written in old Tubbs’ own handwriting,” said Fatty, with a grin. “Golly, it gave him a start to see a prep all done in his own writing!”
“What did he say?” asked Pip.
“He said, ‘And who’s done this prep for you this time, Trotteville?’ And I said, ‘My goodness, sir, it looks as if you have!’ ” said Fatty. The others roared with laughter. Whether Fatty’s school tales were true or not, they were always funny.

He also makes a Christmas card for Inspector Jenks.
Fatty put down a fat book on the table, and a very fine Christmas card, which he had done himself. Bets pounced on it at once.
“Fatty! What a beauty! Surely you didn’t do this yourself? Gracious, it’s as good as any you can find in a shop.”
“Oh, well,” said Fatty, looking pleased, “I’m not bad at art, you know. I was top again this term, and the art master said—”
“Shut up,” said Pip, Larry and Daisy together. Fatty did so love to boast about his cleverness. They wouldn’t let him if they could help it.
“All right, all right,” said Fatty, looking injured. “Always biting my head off! I’ve a good mind not to tell you who the card is for?”
“For your flattering art master, I suppose,” said Pip, painting a holly leaf carefully.
Fatty kept silence. Bets looked at him. “Tell me who it’s for,” she said. “I want to know. I think it’s lovely.”
“Well, as a matter of fact, I meant this card and this book to go to a friend of ours from all of us!” said Fatty. “But seeing that only Bets admires the card, I’ll just send it from myself.”
The others looked up. “Who’s it for then?” asked Daisy. She picked it up. “It’s jolly good. Are these five children meant to be us? And is this Buster?”

Being a ventriloquist, can't forget "auntie" from Strange Bundle. Maybe someone can post the text.

SPEAKS FRENCH FLUENTLY:

The Mystery of Holly Lane
The Frenchman stared after the policeman in surprise. In France policemen did not behave like that. They were interested and excited when a complaint was made to them, they listened, they took notes - but this policeman had said "Gah" and gone cycling away. Extraordinary!

He began to cough. Fatty felt sorry for him, and began to talk to him in perfect French. Trust old Fatty to know the right thing to do! The others stood round, listening in admiration. Really, Fatty might be French!

"How does he learn French like that?" wondered Daisy. "Nobody at our school could even begin to talk like that. Really, Fatty is a most surprising person."

......And off they all went together, Fatty suddenly jabbering in French again.
