Is there a way to remove biro marks off a dust jacket?

Post by IceMaiden »

I bought a copy of Second Form at St Clares this week. It's just arrived and someone has scribbled on two faces in blue biro :x . Annoyingly I didn't notice it on the photos and the seller didn't mention anything about it being marked either. Is there any way to remove biro ink off a paper just jacket without damaging or discolouring the drawing itself?

Just found this on YouTube, IceMaiden. The product referred to is quite expensive though on eBay.

Thanks BB. I'd be willing to buy that however I notice that the book cover on the video looks glossy. I wonder if it will work on paper the same way without removing the colour off the actual picture?

Try a slice of bread.

(In case you think I am joking, this is recommended as a way to remove burn/smoke damage from furniture/property after a fire.)

Unsure if it might work, but definitely a cheap thing to try.

Quite right GloomyGraham. Nice fresh moist bread does wonders though I suspect not with biro on matt jackets though a rubber may work on glossy surfaces. I've found bread can work wonders on illustrations which have been coloured-in (not texta of course) but ordinary coloured pencil. It is startlingly effective on pastels which were widely used in primary-school art in the 1950s.

I will try that, I've heard bread can be used to erase pencil but not sure on biro ink. I do know that ink can be effectively removed from vinyl with spot cream and sunlight however it can bleach the area slightly and I'm wondering if it would lift the colour from the jacket.

I could imagine that your method might also have a negative effect on the colours of the jacket, Pete.

:D :D :D

It's funny Wolfgang, when I used my method on a Betty Maxey cover, nobody warned me about that!

As shocking as it might seem, Pete, I consider it possible that there are people out there who could believe that this actually is an improvement for a Betty Maxey cover.

You beat me to it, Pete!

Seriously, I have heard of people using a sharp pointed knife to remove stains. Great care is obviously needed, though.
