I'm currently reading Enid Blyton's Adventure Treasury, which contains the chapter where the wreck gets washed onto the rocks in the storm. It really is a wonderful description of the storm, the waves and the thrill the children experience in seeing it happen - definitely Enid at the height of her writing.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Vasa in the 'shipyard' where it was temporarily housed in Stockholm in August 1981 before it was moved to the new Vasa Museum in 1988.

I saw it at the Vasa Museum in 1990. Fascinating to see it and hear the story behind it.

And there's me thinking that this was to be a thread on R L Stevenson's great book, Treasure Island! Incidentally, I only read this book for the first time a few years ago.

I've read both books and I find Enid's easily the better.

I love both books but Five on a Treasure Island is the one I most associate with carefree childhood days. My sister and I used to act out Famous Five stories in the garden (the original books and our own stories), and the wreck and the gold ingots certainly caught our imagination. I agree that the description of the storm is wonderful, Katharine.

Funny how you are suddenly reminded of acting out stories as a kid.

I just remembered myself, my sister & two friends (all aged about 7 or 8 ) calling ourselves Pea-Sue-Ed-Lu as we went on our adventures in the oountryside.

Sadly, we discovered no fauns or talking animals :(

I remember making a map like the five found in the box. I coloured it with coffee, folded it repeatedly and wrote very lightly on it in pencil to make it look old and faded! It's still in the loft!

The map sounds good, IceMaiden! My sister and I made our own board game based on Five on a Treasure Island but we no longer have it. Enid Blyton's books were a major influence on us, inspiring numerous games and activities.
