If ever one needed an illustration to show how awful BM's illustrations were, this has to be among the worst. What on earth is Peter Sarstedt doing in the picture?

And lest we forget, she originally drew him as a lighter-skinned Lionel Ritchie lookalike...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

That young lad on the front row looks exactly like I did as a kid - without the curly black hair, that is! :)

When will Pete finally realise that Betty Maxey couldn't draw money from a hole in the wall. Nigel is right, her illustrations are awful.

Dearest Pete, ever the optimist.

To add some quality in the thread, here is a proper illustration of the Kirrins:

Interesting variants! I like Eileen Soper's portrayal of Uncle Quentin in Five on a Treasure Island (1942) but I also like Betty Maxey's depiction of him with glasses in Five Get Into Trouble (1968 edition). Having said that, does Enid Blyton ever describe him as wearing glasses?

What always amazes me is that Betty Maxey portrays him as looking COMPLETELY different in different books. Did she have such a gap between illustrating some of them that she forgot the "look" she'd given to a particular character earlier??
