I've always intended to build a modle railway and base it around the goods yard in Trail. I started researching the project around 2011 but hadn't appreciated that having two kids would be so time consuming 
Anyway, they are finally becoming a tad more independent and I'm, slowly, getting some free time back and planning has started again. A major dilemma I face is deciding on the time period in which to base the model. I first read the books in the late 70s so that is how I visualise the stories but I lean towards setting the model around the time the book was written and going with a standard class 5 steam locomotive and a setting based around steam trains and the 50s?
Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Sounds fun, Nick! It's up to you but I'd go with the early 1950s setting as that's what Enid had in mind, and it seems more exciting to have steam trains and to include figures dressed in clothes of the period.

That is the way I'm leaning. I was hoping to include both the goods yard and station but, from what I can recall, the points are about a mile from the station and that makes for a very large model!

You could always use a bit of artistic licence and have them closer together!

I've discovered that 'real' modellers often squash bits of scene together - and they've a word for it which I can't recall - foreshorten?.
What scale are you going for; N, TT, OO, Z ?
There are lots of online videos to give you ideas

Sounds interesting. I've just finished reading that book to 2 children (not mine). The good yard scenes are very descriptive and we also learned about fog signals, and it would be great to see a model of it one day!
