The characters in later life - professions etc.

Post by gareth jones »

What profession do you think some of Enid's characters would have become in later life. I imagine them as follows.
1. Julian- (in the Police Force or Army.)
2. Dick- (a salesman or his own building firm.)
3. George-(running her own hotel on Kirrin Island.)
4. Ann-(a nurse or teacher.)
5. Jack Trent-(photographer or working for R.S.P.B.)
6. Philip-(zoo-keeper or television on a nature programe.)
7. Dinah-(novelist or teacher.)
8. Lucy-Ann-(nurse or doctor.)
What do the rest of you think.

Makes interesting thinking doesn't it!

But I would have to disagree with one of yours:
George!
I can't ever see her at any age allowing a hotel to be built on Kirrin Island and all sorts of visitors coming to stay - i just don't think this ties in with George at all.

Stubborn George!

Post by Topsy-Turvy »

Raci, you totally read my mind!! Sorry Gareth, no way would George allow anyone to share her island. I think she will be a dog trainer (if she can get her mind off anyone else but Timmy!) or maybe a writer? :)

Anne will be a nurse and much later in life she, Ju and Dick will live together where she will cook and clean for them, echoed by Dick :)

Lucy-Ann will be a governess who takes care of kids at nursery or reception age I think - rather like Molly of Red-Roofs!

The others are pretty much what I thought...I already put this up in the forum but the actor who played Julian in the 1970s series is now a councillor and I sort of see Julian in a similar sort of role :)

Spot on, I think, Kirrin! Julian's talent for art is mentioned in several of the early Famous Five books, but gets forgotten later in the series as far as I remember. I'm sure he would pursue his interest in art as an adult, but perhaps as a sideline to his career in the Army/police force. :)

Yes, Dick would be an explorer. One of the perks of the job would be sampling different foods from around the world, and gastronomic delights would feature frequently in his TV programmes/newspaper articles about his travels.

Anne, the most imaginative and academic of the children, would become a writer, maintaining that it was far more comfortable to write about thrilling adventures than to actually experience them. Some of her books would be illustrated by her brother, Julian.

Yes, I can see George staying in her beloved Kirrin, with a succession of Timmy's descendants as her constant companion. She would work as a dog-trainer, as you said, as well as doing volunteer work as a coastal warden. As for being a potter - perhaps, if she learns patience! I expect her pots and models would sell well at a little craft shop in the village. Her three cousins would be welcome visitors whenever they felt like "getting away from it all," as would Anne's six children, who would love exploring Kirrin with "Uncle George," as they would call her.

Well I just remembered thier interests in the books and made my mind up from that really!
as with George she was hardest relly! but I imaging some cottage crafts hence pottery and maybe a guide round Kirrin and up to Demons rocks with Tinkers help maybe they could be business partners!
Maybe even running Kirrin cottage as a b&b! with Joans relative/decendent as help!

Nah, I reckon George would've become a vet. I can't really see Julian as an artist. OK, he may draw in his own time, but with all his admirable qualities, I see him as a Chief Constable or Major General at the least. Dick probably joined the civil service and pen pushed and Anne might well have married a parson.

All my opinion, of course.

Future Lives

Post by Miranda »

Julian may have artistic leanings, but he's far too much of a bossyboots not to have a high-flying career in some uniformed profession awaiting him. Besides, don't I remember various Superintendents saying things like "we could certainly do with youngsters like you in the Force" - or am I getting him mixed up with Fatty?

I like the idea of George being a coastal warden and selling her pottery in a craft shop. I'm not sure she has the intellectual stamina to complete a veterinary degree - and isn't she too much of a maverick to undergo that sort of formal training? Can't you just imagine her, though, blazing away at thoughtless tourists who drop litter or light fires in the wrong place?

Anne marrying a parson? No, I don't think so - she may be quiet and mouse-like, but she has hidden depths, and she won't be at anyone's beck and call. I can imagine her becoming a writer, or a nurse or teacher. Whatever she did, she would do it very well.

I don't see Dick as a pen-pusher - I imagine him more as the salesman type. Although he is the one with the least developed character, he is a little bit anarchic, and I think once he grows up, he'll be something of a charmer.

What about my beloved Barney? Will he follow his father on to the stage?
He's the type who could turn his hand to anything - it's what he's had to do, to survive. I think he might be working as a car mechanic, and get 'discovered' by a TV talent scout, who gets him a slot presenting a children's programme, with Miranda as the star turn.

Snubby will have a brilliant career as a stand-up comedian. Diana is very decorative - she might do a bit of modelling before getting married and having lots of children. I see Roger as the desk-bound penpusher - he's intelligent and conscientious but doesn't have a great deal of personality, does he?

Professions in later life

Hi everyone, this is a fascinating thread! My thoughts are:

Julian - headmaster of a public school (Eton, perhaps?) - so he could impose some good old fashioned discipline on today's wayward youth, and remind all the students of his exciting but responsible childhood ("now, when I was a boy ..." or "did I ever tell you about ..?").

Dick (now "Richard" Kirrin) - acclaimed travel writer working for the BBC (married to Jo). They holiday in Dorset with the children and spit damson stones with them for fun.

Anne - yes, agree - a nurse or teacher. Agree with Anita - six children sounds about right!

George - don't think she'd get to be a vet, although it would be her dream. Probably running an animal welfare shelter in Kirrin, or maybe even working for the World Wildlife Fund. Not married (doesn't like what it connotes) but with a "life partner" - Nobby - who she met by chance while backpacking around Europe in her early 20s. She realises it isn't so bad being female!

Barney - with his striking good looks and honesty, a TV news presenter, or running his own TV show in the manner of Parkinson. Would quote a line of Shakespeare to close each show.

Snubby - a great sportsman who represents England in cricket as a fast bowling all-rounder (national headlines: "Aussies Snubbed!" ); when fielding he entertains the crowd doing impressions of musical instruments.

Fatty - youngest ever head of Scotland Yard. Later knighted, before going freelance as a modern day Hercule Poirot. Specialises in investigating historical mysteries and wins worldwide acclaim for solving the mystery of Jack the Ripper.

A question: does Fatty marry Bets? I say YES!!! :) He makes himself famous and decides to look for a wife! Only then does he consider Bets could prove useful, after her many years of faithful adoration!

Unfortunately Fatty didn't. Read here for what really happened ....

Future careers of Famous Five

Post by Mollybob »

I was reading Five On Kirrin Island Again last night and found this quote in Chapter Three which might be of interest:

"It's all very mysterious," said Julian. "Uncle Quentin leads rather an exciting life, really, doesn't he? I wouldn't mind being a scientist myself. I want to be something really worth-while when I grow up - I'm not just going into somebody's office. I'm going to be on my own."
"I think I shall be a doctor", said Dick.
"I'm off to get my boat," said George, rather bored with this talk She knew what she was going to do when she was grown up - live on Kirrin Island with Timmy!

I think Julian would be ideal as an Army/Navy officer or certainly a position in which he could tell others what to do. I think Anne would probably just marry someone nice and be very happy as a housewife with lots of children - I can't see her working.
I certainly don't think George would have a hotel on Kirrin Island and I can't see her as a vet, because she doesn't seem to have a fondness for all animals - think of Stinker in Five Run Away Together. I could perhaps see her as a jolly spinster games mistress in a girls boarding school.
As for Dick, maybe he did become a doctor - I always feel he is slightly underdeveloped compared to the other characters and is rather in Julian's shadow, so it is difficult to tell.
