Well - I think that Enid actually added Claudine & Antoinette in her books just to make them more exciting and add some humour.
I think that all the foreign characters in her books are rather funny

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.

Re: Antoinette, St. Clare's
I always imagined that Claudine and Antoinette were the two youngest girls in the family, and that all of their other sisters had already finished school. From the descriptions of the sisters that Claudine and Antoinette gave, I got the impression taht the rest of the family was well behaved - and it was just Claudine and Antoinette that were the handfuls.Moose wrote: Why, incidentally, do you think only Claudine and Antoinette (that we know of) came to St Clares?
Maybe that's why they were sent to St Clares. Their parents couldn't cope with the two mischievious girls, and Mam'zelle had told them of how St Clares 'fixed' up the troublesome girls.

I'm afraid, my English teacher gave me that a birthday present, my dear Nigel!

No Stephen, I don't agree putting Anchovy Paste on Toast is anywhere near as good as you think it is ... I can tell you that if that had happened in my days at boarding school she would have been grounded for weeks and she most certainly wouldn't have gotten chocolate from Matron! She would have got a thorough punishment instead.

Remember that Matron genuinely believed it to have been an accident. Punishing Antoinette under thouse circumstances would have been very harsh.

They didn't mention the ages of their other sisters.
