Re: Golliwogs/Gollies
The Ginger Pop Shop is full of WW2 memorabillia because this was the period when EB was at her most creative. She was fully aware the values the country was fighting for, and she sought to give comfort to the wartime generation of children.
Last weekend I viited Tyneham, the village on the Dorset coast which was evacuated so that the military could have a larger practice area. This is the note they pinned to the church door
"Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free."
After the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris (January 2015) millions of people took to the streets to assert that in a Free society, within the law, no-one has the Right not to be offended.
The purpose of the film Je suis Golliwogg is to show that no-one needs to be offended by the Golliwogg.

He may not be your cup of tea, so you don't have to buy one or return to a shop selling them.
It is a mistake to believe that all black-skinned people don't like them

The Golliwogg was THE toy of WW2 and one again he is in the forefront of the battle for freedom

Great cartoon, Courtenay.
As far as golliwogs are concerned, Viv is quite right when she says it is a mistake to believe that all black-skinned people don't like them. I posted the following on the subject on the forums on 29th October 2009:
I don't wish to enter the arguments for and against the golliwog, but some years ago I asked a Nigerian friend of mine for his thoughts on the subject. He replied: "It's a black doll loved by white children and so I have no problem with the golliwog."

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Not sure I understand. Surely I (and others) have the right to not be offended?Viv of Ginger Pop wrote:

"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Haha, too late! I just saw it and fixed it.
Julie, I think it's fairly clear that Courtenay was making a light-hearted joke. I couldn't work out what Eddie had meant to say, actually, and I still can't. Surely a respected member of the forum should not be above a friendly joke?

Well I realized Eddie meant 'subject' but I am with Fiona in not understanding Viv's post about having or not having the right to be offended.

Re: Golliwogs/Gollies
Wasn't it more along the lines of "we all should defend the right not to be offended' as in people who aren't offended by golliwogs for example shouldn't be made to feel they are wrong just because they're not offended?
Lol!
Lol!

Re: Golliwogs/Gollies
Viv's post means that people do not have the right to ban everything that offends them. Since everything offends somebody that would mean we could do or say practically nothing! Everyone has the right to freedom of expression and if you are offended by something then you walk away or change the channel or whatever.

Re: Golliwogs/Gollies
Of course no one has the right to ban everything that offends them. However, banning Christmas (just an example that I've heard those who criticise the 'PC brigade' cite) is different to a discussion over whether golliwogs should be banned, not that I'm advocating this. I also defend the right to freedom of expression, but then free speech does have its limits in my view and shouldn't allow for racism or any other form of discrimination. There is a fine line.
