I agree that Quentin Blake is not the right person to illustrate some of these books.....
Liked The Secret Seven for a winter one, but the star that comes to mind is Five Go Adventuring Again, one of the best in my opinion.

The illustrator for those ones is actually Mark Beech (although his style is so similar to Quentin Blake's that the latter could almost sue him for plagiarism, if not impersonation  ).

As it's New Year's Eve, I thought I'd mention that 'Father Time and His Pattern Book' is the perfect story to read this evening:

Hmmm, I don't have any of the books with that story in them, but I've heard you recommend it before, Anita. I'll have to look out for it! It sounds very intriguing.

Thanks Anita - I've just re-read the story and updated the link to it in case anyone else would like to read it:

What a beautiful and mysterious and thought-provoking story — thanks, Pete (and Anita for the recommendation)! :D I'll have to read it again — and think about what kind of pattern I want to make next year...

My favorite Enid Blyton book is House-At-The-Corner. This stand-alone-book is surely a classic. It garners a lot of emotions just as the other Blyton standalones, but in my opinion, House-At-The-Corner tops them all. It is a while since I read it (mind you for the second time), but nonetheless, the family intrigues, Dad's accident, Aunt Grace's monetary rescue makes this book a classic. It should be one of those Enid Blyton books that ought to be turned into a movie and if the emotions in it are well captured, it could be a very strong Oscar contender.
Stephen I.

Just found this post further back in this thread - I'm going to start reading this book today in memory of dear Stephen who we so sadly lost this year.

A nice tribute, Pete.

I've enjoyed reading 'Father Time and His Pattern Book' and 'New Year's Party' (which has its own thread) again. They're beautiful tales - haunting and deliciously solemn.

Top choice would be Five Go Adventuring Again, but any of the books with a snowy setting makes for an instant cosy wintery Christmassy feel. I got a copy of The Christmas Book which was one I'd never read before, it's a lovely little book, perfect for reading a bit of each night during the week up to Christmas. Utterly delightful, it's made me want to read the other 'historical' books, ie Tales of Long Ago.

I got Enid's CHRISTMAS TALES as a gift the year before - Xmas 2017 - and found it a perfect go to for the festive season 2018, special favourites are The Christmas Tree Fairy and A Christmas Wish but all the stories are engaging and enjoyable - highly recommended!

This was a funny quote from 2006, but I thought it would be nice to revive this old thread.

I never cared much for "Five get into a Fix" (maybe the original is better than the old German translation from the 1960's whch I have?), but "Tally Ho" was always my favorite FFO & Dog sequel, because of the tree house and Ern watching Tally Ho Cottage from there. And of course the lovely winter setting! 8)
