I know someone who went through much the same experience as Julian Holland when he was a child. He was already familiar with The Naughtiest Girl is a Monitor and he thought back to Julian's story, which resonated with him deeply, during his own crisis. He reflected on how profound Enid Blyton's writing could be and he couldn't understand why critics so often dismissed it as trivial.

Re the system- I believe that in secondary schools the Head should be elected by the staff and there should be a school council with one rep per year freely elected by secret ballot and with veto power over all rules.

I thought Julian had the right attitude- life is for living and enjoying. I believe some schools limited pocket money- including Benenden.
Had I been in Julian's shoes I'd have explained that I didn't tell on Arabella because I wasn't a sneak.

There was a real life film star called Elizabeth Allen in the 30s.
