Bolsters

Post by lizarfau »

The Malory Towers and St Clare's girls and also George Kirrin found them useful ... you put them in your bed and it looked as if you were in there, sound asleep.

What are/were they, though? And has anyone ever made use of them in this way?

As I understand it a bolster is a long pillow that extends the full width of a double bed, my parents used to use them, but in this case, perhaps it is just another word for a pillow.

Yes, someone certainly has made use of them in that way, and right under the tip of my nose too, so to speak. A most deceitful trick.

I will not be fooled again though.

bolsters were long tube-shaped pillows, which stretched across the bed. They were put under pillows, i suppose to 'bolster' them and make them higher. They were also used in the 1800's, laid down the middle of the bed to stop any 'hanky panky'!!....
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I used bolsters for a trick like that, once, a long time ago. And I wasn't caught either. 8)

Do you know I've bought them for our beds! Because of Enid Blyton I have always been endlessly fascinated by them!

They look very decorative but my husband hates them :D .
