Hear hear. A lovely glimpse of the Four once more! Love the ending, - very Blyton like. :)

Many thanks; good job someone reminded me about the Puffins though.

You can't have a good story without a couple of puffins.

I was rather hoping that the Adventurous Four would find themselves in the outlying Scottish islands where Philip, Dinah, Jack and Lucy-Ann (and a certain pair of puffins) are setting out to rescue Bill from the villains. Oh yes, and Horace Tipperlong would have to get a look-in as well. 8)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I actually think everyone on here should have a puffin in their avatar...! :lol:

I have! ;-)

Aren't the Adventurous Four books better-known for gulls... and shags?

I wondered about the puffins too, but figured it was an in-joke between other forumites! :D

Sarah, "The Sea of Adventure" has Huffin' & Puffin' as lovable animal characters and somebody mentioned that "The Adventurous Four" must have inspired "The Sea of Adventure" later on.
That's where I figure the in-joke comes from.

This is why I find the Mary Pollock books so interesting, as 'The Children of Kidillin' (1940) was written before either The Adventurous Four or The Sea Of Adventure and has a very similar (though scaled-down) plot and similar setting. :) I'm sure Kidillin was a sort of test story, as it is also set in the war, for The Adventurous Four
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

The puffins 'joke' started with watching real puffins on a web-cam some months ago now. They gradually took on a life of their own. Remember this? - http://burhou.livingislands.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
