I'm a bird enthusiast, Nigel. It's a pretty standard sort of joke, mainly among male birdwatchers, but I couldn't resist, since Anita started it. :mrgreen:

(There was something I read once by Sean Dooley, editor of Australian Birdlife magazine, in which he described a time when he was on a boat trip with a group of fellow birdwatchers. Spotting a particular type of seabird, he gave an excited yell of "Boobies! Boobies! I've got some boobies over here!" It was only then that he recalled this voyage wasn't exclusively for birdwatchers, and realised that a whole lot of tourists on board - some with young families - were suddenly backing away from this bloke with the binoculars... :P )

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

And an equal amount of people were asking the bloke with the binoculars if they could borrow them, I suppose? :D

I've no idea, since the author didn't say. 8)

I wondered about the puffins too, but figured it was an in-joke between other forumites! :D

Sarah, "The Sea of Adventure" has Huffin' & Puffin' as lovable animal characters and somebody mentioned that "The Adventurous Four" must have inspired "The Sea of Adventure" later on.
That's where I figure the in-joke comes from.
The puffins 'joke' started with watching real puffins on a web-cam some months ago now. They gradually took on a life of their own. Remember this? - http://burhou.livingislands.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
How could I forget!! Not that I really watched the web-cam myself, but I was aware of others doing so.

I had to change one of my passwords at work today and after seeing your replies earlier 'puffin48' seemed the natural choice! :D

Someone should write a story where evil German Nazi spy twins Pippa and Zoe try to replace good British twins Mary and Jill, and there's a massive battle for Britain and the Empire!

I've just bought this book and The Adventurous Four Again, for my grand-daughter for Christmas.

I loved the story of the Adventurous Four Again, but I haven't as yet read The Adventurous Four. I'm searching for a good old copy. :)

You don't have to search for long, there are plenty on eBay.

There are a few 'original' hardbacks on eBay. I agree, Chrissie, I always try to get the originals.
