I think Block is the 'best' baddie. Really sinister, ruthless and devious.
And I have a 'soft spot' for Barling. He is one of the few baddies (maybe the only one) who is portrayed in a kind of romantic way. Everyone knew he was a smuggler, but they had no evidence to convict him. As the inspector said 'he doesn't seem to live in this world at all'.
After all, if the marshes are drained, the place may lose it's special atmosphere (and also it may have a detrimental effect on the environment).
So I secretly hope that Quentin's plans did not go through!

It has to be Block for me too - a really sinister villain. But there weren't others in the list which I liked - Mr Perton or Rooky? They aren't in the list.
Block's character adds to the spooky and creepy feeling of Smuggler's Top.

Block was an excellent baddie, but he's not the favourite, mine has to be the same as Philip mentioned, Rooky and Mr Perton.

I love the conniving Maggie and Dirty Dick - stealing the food really was a good idea, shame they under estimated Timmy!
Block is tops and I like Lou and Tiger Dan as well.

Wow! Thanks, Tufty, for resurrecting a 4 year old thread! I must trawl the archives someday!

Nigel, yes, you must trawl the archives someday - a wealth of information is hidden. But in this case, it isn't really me that you have to thank; no, thank booklover, for it was because of his "All the polls" thread that I came to know of this.

Great topic. Block for me too, his character really fits the atmosphere of the book. Lou and Tiger Dan were also good as were the Sticks, if only because it was such a pleasure to see them get their comeuppance.
