Re: Who's the cleverest character of all?
Normally I don't go in for speculation of the "what happened next" variety, but the exception that proves the rule for me has always been a deep, earnest hope that Fatty and Bets eventually got married. The older I got the more I looked for textual confirmation - Mrs Trotteville's fondness for Bets, Bets' fondness for Winston Churchill (she idolises fat, brave men!), Fatty buying Bets a baby - I mean a doll - for Christmas - Bets' care of Fatty in Strange Bundle - yes, you can explain it all away, but I decided it meant that Enid foresaw a happy future for them as husband and wife!
Gwendoline lay down, angry. She determined to make herself miserable and cry.

I agree, of all Blytons child characters Fatty and Bets are the two most likely to end up together. Moonrakers scenario is a very warm and cosy one though I too agree with Daisy that they would have married. Or perhaps they might have lived together, not so much as lovers but as old friends, in the Hilton's large old house and met every day in the library to discuss progress in the latest case.

Like Kitty and Lucky Star, I too have wondered about Fatty and Bets eventually marrying. I don't think I ever thought about that when I read the books as a child but it does occur to me whenever I re-read the series as an adult, especially the opening chapters of The Mystery of the Strange Bundle.
If you wouldn't mind sharing your story with us I'd love to read it, Daisy, though it's entirely up to you of course.

Definately, and I also think that Barney and Diana would end up marrying each other too. I think there are some references about Barney being quite 'fond' of Diana more so than he is of the others in the last 2 Barney books.Lucky Star wrote:I agree, of all Blytons child characters Fatty and Bets are the two most likely to end up together.
Back to the topic - I think I have already agreed that Fatty is the cleverest. I also think Julian from The Naughtiest Girl is a Monitor is very clever and has a bright future ahead of him.

I love these poll and poll-style threads!
So dragging the thread back on topic, I would say Claudine and Antoinette get my vote for being the cleverest of them all. I am always amazed by the sheer ingenuity and brazenness of their actions. I would love to see Fatty pitted against these two. I wonder who would win?

Re: Who's the cleverest character of all?
It would have to be Lucy Oriel (despite being not quite so hot at maths) or top-of-the-form-even-though-she- does-naff-all Alicia Johns for me. I was very disappointed to find Alicia became a policewoman in the Pamela Cox books. I thought she'd either go completely off the rails and end up drinking rough cider in a park or become the new Stephen Fry. Such a shame.

Re: Who's the cleverest character of all?
I think Miss Pepper was quite clever. She was very astute, undoubtedly intelligent and was able to manage any eventuality. Of the child characters, I would say that Fatty was the cleverest. Uncle Quentin was obviously brainy but wasn't at all clever in dealing with the human race.
