Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Two arrived today - a lovely dust wrapper edition of 'The Mystery of the Vanished Prince' - another of the Find Outer books I didn't have with a genuine dust wrapper until now. Really good quality. I highly recommend 'World of RARE Books' on eBay (not to be confused with 'World of Books' which I DON'T recommend at all! ). I now have all the Find Outer books in original dust wrapper versions - except Banshee Towers, of course!
Also 'Secret of the Old Mill' arrived today - really pleased I finally have an original copy with all the lovely Soper illustrations. Lovely addition to my collection.

My goodness Wolfgang you will need a new apartment soon in which to store all your books. Sounds like an interesting assortment of books though.

Don't worry, John, there's still some space available . I'm afraid that most of these English books I bought features changes to the original editions.

An interesting haul, Wolfgang. I imagine the St. Clare's record isn't very easy to find. Do you have any other Enid Blyton records - and have you got a record-player?

Did you buy the books online(ebay?) or at a local bookshop, Wolfgang?
Do you have many editions for one title? I am curious because you have bought so many EB books since forever.

I'll second that. I've bought from World Of Rare Books recently and the service was quick and the books were better than the description.Rob Houghton wrote: I highly recommend 'World of RARE Books' on eBay (not to be confused with 'World of Books' which I DON'T recommend at all! ).

I'll third it. I've bought two or three books from them and the service was as excellent as the books themselves. They also send you a voucher with a discount code for your next purchase, just to tempt you further!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Thanks, Anita. I didn't look for the record, it was offered on German ebay for 7€ (including shipping), so I bought it. I have some more records (Famous Five, Adventure, St Clare's) in German, and I have two record players, one attached to a hi-fi unit (though the amplifier causes some trouble in the meantime) and a stand-alone device. The stand-alone device features recording on USB-sticks, but unfortunately you have no chance to adjust the volume, so the recordings usually have much over-steering.Anita Bensoussane wrote:An interesting haul, Wolfgang. I no longer go to local bookshops, because the closest one is several miles away, their supply is not that large and the service is not the best. That's why I finally decided to rely on Amazon for new books (and sometimes used books as well). I buy a lot of things on ebay, but sometimes I go to a local flea market to check their goods out.sixret wrote:Did you buy the books online(ebay?) or at a local bookshop, Wolfgang?

Usually I'm happy with one version, but if there are changes of text, I sometimes buy such an edition as well. Actually I don't mind French or English editions either.

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
Another book arrived today - The Big Noddy Book. (I'm sure Anita will be jealous!).
It's this one - number 1 -
I had it as a child, but it was a second-hand copy which had belonged to my older cousin, and was falling apart, coloured-in and cut out. I also recently discovered it was a 1960's abridged version. The version I have just bought is the 'full version' - with extra stories - all were removed as early as the 1960's due to their supposedly racist content - 'Cheeky Little Black Doll' - about a black doll ho tricks Noddy out of his clothes (!!) Noddy's Little Hooter - which also includes the character of the Cheeky black doll, Big Ears' Smokey Chimney - which involves Noddy getting covered in soot, seeing his reflection, and thinking there's 'a horrid black man' in Big Ears' house. I can see why these were removed, but surprised they were removed so early.
The book is in very good condition with the Noddy Birthday card uncoloured and intact, the colouring page uncoloured, and the 'belongs to' box not written in - really nice, and very nostalgic!

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I just bought the above Enid Blyton Journal plus five others from an ebay seller.
He had about a dozen for sale and rather than get into a 'bidding frenzy' for the six I wanted,I asked him privately if he would consider giving me a 'buy it now' price for the six I wanted.
He replied with a reasonable price for the six I wanted including delivery and they are now on their way to me via Hermes.
This may be a good technique for others who need/collect Enid Blyton Magazines/Journals from ebay and don't want to bid for every single item etc etc.
I'm still on the lookout for some other Enid Blyton Society Journals, the numbers I'm looking for being 28,31,35,36,37,38,39.

An iconic cover, Pete.
I hope Ming's family and friends weren't caught up in the recent killings by Daesh/IS in Dhaka. It appears that mainly tourists were attacked, though.

I envy you, having Journals you have yet to read, Pete! That was a great issue and a brilliant cover pic!

Re-reading MT and SC, it's hardly a flattering portrayal of English social attitudes in the 1940s and 50s, is it?
If anyone is interested in this, there is an excellent story that I read about the end of WWII in Britain told through the eyes of a 12 year old girl who was evacuated to the States at age 7 then comes back to Britain and faces a horrible time as she was unable to conform. Plus she is sent to a dreadful boarding school of horrors.
It is called Back Home by Michelle Magorian who also wrote Goodnight Mister Tom.
Check it out, it is brilliant!
