You are correct Pete, it isn't right. It is a definite forgery and looks like one of the huge number of forged signed books that came from a bookshop on the Isle of Wight. This is a daring business seller as he gives his name and address, so I am sure like many other sellers that he doesn't realise it is not a genuine signature, I just hope that nobody buys it!

Thank you Tony - that signature just did not look right to me.
He has another book 'signed' by Enid for sale that looks a bit more convincing.

I notice his various listings state genuine signed and also just signed - I wonder whether that gives sellers some sort of wiggle room if the signature of the book they are selling is a fake!

I enjoy the audacity of someone who fakes a signature mere inches from a genuine replica of the signature...
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

When was Enid's signature first printed on and in the books?

'The Mystery Of The Secret Room' in 1945 had the now familiar signature on the dust jacket. (The same year 'The Naughtiest Girl Is A Monitor' had a strange semi-signature.)

Although the Famous Five were late (1951) with dust jacket signatures, 'Five Go Off To Camp' in 1948 had the signature inside and on the hard front cover.

I think it was on Enid Blyton's Readers 1942 splodj - but that is only off the top of my head - I could very well be wrong!!

Edit: Found this quote from Tony which should help!

Thanks. So that was 1942 for the dust jacket although, being pedantic, I notice there are no lines underneath as in Secret Room! The 1946 Adventure and Malory books followed on soon after Secret Room dust jacket-wise.

Was 1948 the first time for the signature inside and on the hard front cover? Duncan has used my Camp copy posted here (claiming it was Pips!) in his article on inside signatures, and I cannot see an earlier one.

It is interesting how the 'logo' did not take hold in a concerted way. Presumably because the different publishers could decide individually how to use it.

The 1944 book Billy and Betty at the Seaside features the signature with the two lines (on the cover):

"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
