Nice one!

I wondered what the book in similar condition without inscription would fetch.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ENID-BLYTON-P ... 416e0fee1f" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This copy starts at £30 but I don't think it will reach over £1,000!

Regards

Pete

I was born in 54 but always called my paternal Grandmother Nanna, I didnt know my other grandmother as she had passed after giving birth to my Mum, but she had an old fashioned name which was nice it was "May Agnes".

I have now 11 grandchildren and if they call me Granny I chase them

How sad that your mother never knew her mother. I wonder if your grandmother's life could have been saved if she gave birth now? We take so much for granted nowadays. It must have been extremely difficult for your grandfather too, bringing up a baby - presumably no welfare state back then. I know someone who lost his mother at an early age back in the 1920s, and his sister was sent to live with relatives in France, although the boy stayed with his father in England. Not sure if it was because he was older and therefore able to pay his way quicker, or possibly they just felt a girl should have a female influence in her life.

Does anyone know how modern the name Nana is? I had both a Grandma and a Nana, and I always felt that my nana was much 'trendier' than my grandmother, partly because she was quite a bit younger, but also because she had chosen to be called Nana. I don't remember reading any books when I was growing up where a woman was called Nana. Granny always seemed very old fashioned to me though. Maybe because it was used as a form of teasing when I was at school, if someone didn't like your clothes they'd call you an 'old Granny'.

Both my grandmothers liked/like to be called "Nanna" even though there was quite an age gap between them (one was 40 when I was born and the other was almost 60).

That's interesting Anita, so perhaps age isn't a factor, unless of course your 60 year old Nana was young at heart? In my small circle, I have found that those people who become grandmothers before the age of about 60 or so tend to be called Nana, although I know of a couple of exceptions. They tend to have opted for the grandmother label for reasons such as having had or known a Nana who wasn't a character they wish to be identified with.

As my eldest child is only 18, I'm hoping that I don't become either Grandma, Granny OR Nana for several years yet though.

Same here, as my elder child is only 17. However, when/if I become a grandparent I'd quite like to be called "Grandma" or "Granny" because to me those words sound cosy and friendly, especially "Granny", and remind me of Enid Blyton books!

Yes, it will (hopefully) be Grandma for me too one day. I probably wouldn't mind Granny either. I don't know why I'm not keen on Nana, maybe it makes me think of a nusery nurse type figure. The two that spring to mind are those featured in Ballet Shoes, and the dog in Peter Pan.

Also, I think I've got the build more fitting for a cosy, cuddly Grandma, Nanas should be slim, young and trendy. I'll now sit here and wait for the backlash of Grandmas out there who are have slender figures and are young and stylish.

Izzy told me that her grandmothers were known as Nana and so it must have
been fairly well used. As Katherine says it dooes sound an affectionate name.

I had a Gran and Grandad, and a Grandma and Grandpa - which was great to be able to tell them apart right away rather than having to add another name or place to know which one it was.

Neither would have entertained the idea of being a Granny or a Nana, I'm not sure if Nana is used much in Scotland though Nan is fairly common. Both sets of grandparents had already chosen their preferred names by the time I was born as I have older cousins on both sides.

"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I have an Ajji and an Ajoba, and a Nana and a Nini. My Nana is male, basically my grandpa. All 4 are Indian names. I have year older cousins on 1 side and way older cousins on the other. So they too had chosen what they wanted way back! I like them just the way they are.
