I can't understand why this is causing so much intrigue! It is very common to add a 'flourish' to a signature, I do it myself. I agree that Enid's is very distinctive, but it is no great mystery.

I really wanna know! Yes,it's not a 'nice juicy mystery' but all the same there must be someone knowledgeable about Enid who knows! :D

Maybe one day Enid Blyton was signing something when the pen slipped and left a mark beneath her name, like a short line. "Dash and double dash!" she exclaimed. Suddenly, her eyes lit up and she said, as she deliberately added another short line, "Yes, double dash - I like it!" And the rest is history!

That could be possible......
It could be as simple as that .... :D

But Enid took such active control in every detail of the way all her work including every illustration, was marketed and presented to the world that I'm sure her unique signature with its two distinctive dashes is shown that way for a very pertinent reason- but what that reason is seems to be going to remain a mystery!!

Good explanation, Anita.

I've heard that a person who signs their name and then puts a line beneath it, weather it be curved or straight shows a person of determined character and strength.

Enid probably did two so that everyone would know that she wasn't a person to be messed around in those days of it being a 'man's world' so to speak! I am the boss, is what those two lines say! :)

Yes Julie.
That sounds very plausible indeed.Especially in Enid's case.
Thank you for posting that interesting explanation.

We're doing some good detection here on this now.

Wonder how Maureen is getting on with her research on this?? :D

Another possibility:

To show a bit of end, or character to her sign.

In the film Enid starring Helena Bonham Carter she is depicted as adding the two dashes as a sort of mischievous afterthought when signing her first publishing contract. That would seem as good an explanation as any.

That does sound like a very plausible idea. One that sounds credible.I wonder what date she signed her first contact?
And if that is the real explanation, why that particular incarnation of her signature only started to appear in her books in the mid to late 1940's...
I also wonder what led the makers of the documentary to include the two dashes? Was it speculation on their part or did they have access to documents perhaps even copies of the contract you mentioned,John.

Anyway, thank you very much for posting that very interesting piece of info-I wonder if we can solve this mystery before the end of the Xmas Hols!! (That sounds like a line from the Find-Outers! :D )

Regards

Pete

A very likely explanation Anita! :D

I wonder why Enid would like it? I mean, it seems a bit weird really!

She probably wanted to make a logo type thing.

Well yeah it does actually, but to me, it seems more of a logo, you know, take it out and it's not Enid kind of thing.
