1978: Jacket

Post by lukas64 »

Does anyone know the type of jacket one frequently sees Julian, Dick, or George wearing in the 1978 series? It looks like it might be leather and has stripes. Also, can one buy jackets like these anywhere?
Thanks! :D

Ah I've always loved that jacket. You can see my own little tribute to the jacket here : https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sadly I don't know where you can buy one!
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I remember many youngsters wearing these sort of jackets. I think the material was a light weight one, almost like the 'shell' jacket materials. As for the name of them, I really don't remember.

I remember them too. They weren't leather as far as I remember but, as Julie said, some sort of lightweight material. I doubt you will be able to buy one these days unless you search through the retro or vintage clothes shops. Many of these have websites, perhaps you could google vintage clothing and start browsing all the shops that pop up.

I've always thought they were some kind of cagoule - or are they something different?

Would it be something like this one: http://www.polyvore.com/lyle_scott_navy ... d=11927270" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
From the fabric used at the time, I'm assuming the jackets were wet-look nylon if not leather. I've already spent way too much time trying to figure this out...oops.

I used to wear a very similar jacket back in 1978/79. Made out of very similar lightweight material to a cagoule, these garments typically sported stripes down the arms and contained many useful pockets. The design of these jackets appeared to be derived from the world of motor sports.

Indeed. James Hunt comes to mind.

Hmm...does anyone know what they were called at the time? Also, a German forum was mentioning that they were made of PVC.

They look like cheap versions of the Cafe Racer jackets.

No they weren't PVC, they were a very flimsey lightweight material, almost cagoule like as mentioned.

My daughter and son wore them in the 70s and we always referred to them as bomber jackets.

The jackets look cool, when I was a child my grandmother was a very keen knitter and made me jumpers for Christmas and birthdays which I had to wear. One had a Rudolph the red noised reindeer another had a fish leaping from a stream. I was the laughing stock of the village, I don't mean to sound ungrateful and I cherish the memory of my grandmother with all my heart.
