Hi, I'm new here.

I like the 70s series better.

I can remember watching VHS tapes borrowed from a video rental store to see the episodes.

The show's cast was great and it was obvious that they worked well together. The theme song and the opening and closing of the show are great too.

Looking back now, I guess I might have liked the episodes to be a bit longer. There's limited character development that can happen in a half hour episode.

The 90s series is still worth watching though. It's nice that the 90 series was able to do all the books.

Welcome, foodlover! I agree with you - most of the episodes ran to around 23 minutes, which is quite ridiculous! To give any depth to the storyline or characters, a minimum of 50 minutes is needed.

Really, 50 minutes? I think you can give a character depth in nearly any amount of time. Of course, it would have been great if the shows were longer anyway, anything for more Famous Five! What they could also have done is developed characters over a few episodes, so maybe they change from the beginning of the series to the end of the series, growing and having new ideas.

I have always and will always prefer the 70s version, even if they wore those silly bell-bottom flares that I laughed at even as a young kid!

For some reason the 90s version looks too 'goody-goody' & stuffy, if anything it makes the Famous Five stories seem really dated. Although the 70s version clearly reflects the time period it was made in, somehow that gives the stories a timeless feel.

70's series, enough said.
The plummy accents, flares, great locations, brilliant supporting actors, excellent child stars and it was shot on film, an absolutely unprecented landmark in children's TV.
I haven't seen the episodes since they were first broadcast but eagerly expecting the DVD release.

70's series I prefer. - Although they are both good, the 70's seems more real and I think the 90's series have tried to hard to make things look 'old fashioned!'

The 90s series will age slower because of the way they tried to make things more authentic and the way it was shot, especially without the nighttime filters the 70s used.
"You're so sharp you'll cut yourself one day!" Hunchy said going to the door
"So my Mother told me that when I was two years old!" said Julian and the others giggled.

I think we should learn to appreciate both series - the seventies series
as an image of the 1970s and the nineties as a reflection of the 1950s.
Both Georges are excellent in different ways with the 1970s being more
rebellious but the 1990s version being loveable and very well acted. However I do
much prefer the boys and the dog from the 1970s series
