In fact growing up in the 1970's I presumed that was the accepted and 'correct' way for children's TV series' to end! Obviously it happened in The Famous Five (and also quite often in the 1990's FF too!) - and it happened quite often at the end of 'Scooby Doo' and probably a few others too.
Yeah it's one of those awful hangovers from the 50s and 60s Saturday morning kids films where it was important to reassure younger kids that may not have followed the "intricacies" of the plot that whatever has happened, everyone is good, healthy and happy at the end.

It also happens at the end of almost every episode of Murder She Wrote (or so I've heard. I've definitely not seen every episode many times). My favourite ending went something like:
"The crossword puzzle was really a clue to the hidden nazi gold," everyone laughs; freezeframe.
a couple of good examples in the first row....
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

The freeze frame laughing has been a long running thing in America. The superb 70's comedy 'Police Squad' starring Leslie Neilson, was a perfect example...although they were just taking the Mickey out of programmes from that era!! :D

I like the fact they actually 'perform' the freeze-frame rather than it being a real freeze frame!
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)
