I am trying to find the story about a girl who was going to a party and thought her mum had forgotten. She tries to get herself ready but only has a dress that needs mended/ironed. I think it turns out that her mum knew all along and the little girl had gotten the day of the party wrong-ring any bells?

Welcome, Lisa. That sounds like 'The Day of the Party', about a little girl called Sheila. She thinks the date of her friend's party has come and she is horrified to see that her party frock is "crumpled and un-ironed". However, it turns out that she has carelessly torn an extra day off the calendar and that the party is not until the next day. The story can be found in the following books (except for A Story Party at Green Hedges, which is something different with the same title). The tale you want can also be found in The Enid Blyton Story Book (WHSmith, 1989), though that isn't shown in the link:
