Hello,
I know it's a long shot but I am wondering if anyone knows the title of a book I loved in my childhood - it was a collection of short stories but I don't remember many details. I remember an illustration of someone hanging washing out on a line, possibly a story about someone losing matches, and on the inside back cover of the book was something about different girls of different time eras: I remember each had a little verse, the last one being of a girl of the future in a silver spacesuit! There may have been a story in the book about a fairy that needed her wings mending, and they were mended with gossamer thread - or something like that.
Ring any bells?
Many thanks

Re: Looking for a short stories book
Any idea roughly when the book would have been published?
There are three short stories with matches in the title:
Amelia Jane and the Matches
Sally Simple's Matches
Dame Thimble and her Matches
Sally and Dame Thimble appear in a couple of different short story collections.

"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.
