Unknown Books?

Post by caretaker.thms »

I can remember in my youth having a old Enid blyton book.
their where 2 story's in the book
i cant remember the first but i can remember the other as being about a fisher boy.
a young boy had moved to the sea to escape the war time bombs? and meet this fisher boy. ben? joe?
can any one place this book?

another was a pixie who ran away and an umbrella caught him?. he was given a badge in the shape of an umbrella to remind him if he ran away again the umbrella would catch him.
any ideas?

baring in mind i last read these books 30 years ago and memory's are a bit hazy

The first one could be Smuggler Ben - ring any bells? The plot doesn't sound right but you mention a "Ben" as a possibility which made me think of it and the two in one also makes me think this - did it also come with "The Secret of Cliff Castle"?.

No idea at all as to the second one...

That could perhaps be "The Strange Umbrella," which appeared in The Strange Umbrella and Other Stories as well as a few other collections. Tiptap the pixie is lazy. When he borrows an umbrella without permission, it turns out that it's a magic umbrella which takes him to Wizard Ho-Hum, who makes the pixie work hard. Tiptap tries to run away but the umbrella follows him, catches him and brings him back to the wizard. I don't want to give away the end of the story, but Tiptap is given a tie-pin in the shape of a red umbrella.

I have the book enquired about in this thread.

It goes by the collective title of 'Mystery Stories' and comprises 'The Secret Of Cliff Castle' and 'Smuggler Ben'.

It is a Collins book from 1962. In the name of Enid Blyton with no mention of Mary Pollock.

All the Mary Pollock books were reprinted later under Enid's well known name.

Thanks Daisy.

Did Collins reprint all of them or just select the 2 they thought were the best?

These are numbered 3 and 5 in the series. If they had issued all 6 in double volumes I would have expected them to be in consecutive order.
