Re: Guess the book from Eileen & Betty's illustrations!
I don't know why I put so much thought into my answers when they are almost always wrong I should just pick a random book, I'd have a better chance...
But OK if Anita is close then how about Five Are Together Again?

"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Okay, I'll go out on a limb here—but partly because most of this illustration can be found on the main Enid Blyton Society site!—but let me guess:
"Five on Kirrin Island Again" — with Julian discovering "weeds growing round the edges of the stone".
Love Eileen Soper's artwork, BTW.

Brilliant, I got one. On a side note the old Gyspy woman depicted in the picture has really been well captured by Maxey. She really does look aged and very mysterious. In this case the minimalist style of Maxey has worked very well as almost all of the attention is focused upon the woman.

I think it’s from Five Run Away Together.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.
