It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

There are several different possible words that fit the bill. The answers (according to the magazine) were (1) bookkeeper; (2) withhold; (3) skiing; and (4) vacuum. You got them all between you, so well done. (The magazine also came up with pukka and duumvirate, though they are hardly common.)

Interestingly, Rob, Chambers only gives 'sh' for hush. I've certainly seen it written with any number of 'h's.

Now some more phrases for you to work out:

(1) DAYDAYOUT

(2) ENTURY

(3) PURITY PIETY

(4) TH TH

I did think about 'Pukka Pies'

2 could be 'short of a century'.

You're right with (1), Rob. That's not right with (2), John (BB). My first thought was 'end of the century', but it's not that either. It's a bit less obvious.

Looks that way. So here are the answers:

ENTURY = LONG TIME, NO SEE

TH TH = THE ENDS OF THE EARTH

Neither would I. Bit reminiscent of that cryptic crossword clue "RLD" that turned out to be THE END OF THE WORLD, but at least there we had the numbers of letters in each word of the answer as a hint!!

Thanks for putting us out of our misery, Dave! I'd never have thought of those answers.
