I keep coming back to this but cannot remember where a cigar is mentioned...I have a vague notion that in one of the books (was it in the FFO ?) that one of the characters had the remains of a cigar in his pocket in order to "smell grown up"!!! Does anyone remember that or am I having a "senior moment" and mixing it up with something else I read?

Yes, you're right, Boodi. That was the main scene I was thinking of as I'd just read the book - in The Mystery of the Disappearing Cat, Fatty leaves his father's cigar ends in the cat cage as one of the clues. He claims he smokes them and Pip says he probably just carries them to make himself "smell grown up" - which EB tells us is too close to the truth for Fatty's liking!

Fatty also leaves one of his father's cigar ends as a clue for Ern to find in The Mystery of the Hidden House. So I was thinking of either of those moments.
