OK, no one answered it, so here it is:

FFO + Ern found out five "could-be's" and then chose three to further investigate. Later on they definitely concentrate themselves on Fairlin House, previously called The Ivies.
It was Larry who'd first found out FH.

New question (easier, I hope  ):

Also in Strange Messages, people insisted telling Goon about a flower-named house, instead of The Ivies. What was its name?

Didn't people keep telling him about "The Poplars" (trees)?

Mea culpa, Anita

You're right, people insisted on telling him about The Poplars (obviously trees, not flowers!).

I didn't check up on the book, because I was almost sure it was The Zinnias

Your question, please...

 I thought you might have got mixed up with poppies!

Next question:

Bets has such a "terrific admiration" for this man that she keeps a photo of him on her mantelpiece.

Who is the man, and in which book is this mentioned?

 I actually know a findouter question! I never read these books as much as a child so don't know the storylines as well as other series.
Anyway......

A, Winston Churchill from Missing Necklace

Q, What was Fatty doing the first time the other children met him?

Was it carrying buckets of water to fight the fire at Mr Hick's workroom? I can't remember them meeting him before this.

Ok, next question:

How many animals did Goon encounter in Mr. Fellow's house, according to his report to Superintendent Jenks?

Yes, it was Dark Queen.

In the house, there was a dog, a pig and a kitten - and I'm guessing you're not counting the man who wanted his auntie as an animal!

A new question - Ern found a pencil end on Christmas Hill in The Mystery of the Hidden House - what initials were on it?

I just went and checked Hidden House, and yes, it's "E.H." -- I remembered correctly, somehow. And yet I forget the most obvious things...

Anyway, here's one:

Who does everyone constantly refer to as "Twit"?
