OK, no one answered it, so here it is:

FFO + Ern found out five "could-be's" and then chose three to further investigate. Later on they definitely concentrate themselves on Fairlin House, previously called The Ivies.
It was Larry who'd first found out FH.

You're right, people insisted on telling him about The Poplars (obviously trees, not flowers!).

I didn't check up on the book, because I was almost sure it was The Zinnias

I never read these books as much as a child so don't know the storylines as well as other series.

I just went and checked Hidden House, and yes, it's "E.H." -- I remembered correctly, somehow. And yet I forget the most obvious things...
