Correct, it is Jack's friend Richard Lawson, who is initially very impressed with Melisande, which makes Jack feel ashamed of his twin sister Jane. When Jack tells Jane that he is ashamed of her she is very hurt, but then resolves to "improve" herself and succeeds, with the result that the next time Richard visits he does not recognise her and thinks she is very attractive!

Quite right, it is red and white stripes. So over to you for the next question. By the way I saw a first edition of Mystery Moor for sale and so I bought it as I only had a kindle edition. I didn't think there would be any text changes from the kindle (current) version but there are. I will detail them in another post (on the books forum). One of them really made me laugh.

The answer is both true and false, depending on whether you count the incorrect spelling. The boy in the story was 'Wilfrid'.
