Indeed to goodness, they are not. They are packed off to good old Gwlad (i.e. Wales)

"Gwlad" is the Welsh word for "country". "Cymru" is the Welsh word for "Wales".

Anita, I always thought it meant 'nation'. I suppose 'country' can mean that too. But in 'Land of My Fathers' when they sing 'Gwlad! Gwlad!', aren't they using it to mean 'Wales'? i must confess that i haven't sung that since I was at primary school in the 1950's.

"Gwlad! Gwlad!" means "Country! Country!", "Nation! Nation!" or "Land! Land!" In the song it has the sense of "My country/nation/land!" and it does of course refer to Wales. The song's title is Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau which, as you've said, is usually translated (Old) Land of My Fathers - the word "wlad" being a mutated version of "gwlad".

Miss Pepper is called Becky - I think so, anyway!

Thanks, Poppy.

Is there a character known as "Grinning Graham" in Holiday House?

Does Dafydd, the innkeepers' son, have a pet goose called Meddle?

I believe Dafydd's goose is called Waddle, not Meddle.
