ME Atkinson - Thanks IceMaiden!

Post by pete9012S »

Thanks IceMaiden for all the great Enid Blyton books on ebay you have been pointing out for us.
I often see what else some of these sellers have for sale:

I just won these two books for the princely sum of £3 for the two - so thank you very much for all the sellers you have been recommending!

I don't think I have read any books by ME Atkinson before, so I am looking forward to taking these with me when I go on holiday next weekend.

Thanks again!

It looks like the great Stuart Tresilian illustrated some of her books!

A great buy, Pete! I've got four "Locketts" books by M. E. Atkinson but have only read the first one, August Adventure. It was a lovely read, transporting me to a slower-paced world of freedom and fun. I was delighted to see that Stuart Tresilian illustrated some titles in the series.

Thanks Anita - sounds like I will enjoy them.

Obviously, I have to compare the glove and the characters in ME Atkinson's 1942 book with our 1946 Castle Of Adventure!!

By a strange coincidence I'm reading "Challenge to Adventure" at the moment. It's years since I last read it although it's been on my shelf for ages!

I'm blaming IceMaiden - she's a menace.
I used to have a few quid in my wallet before all these great books came along!! :D

Strangely, for someone who collects children's books, I don't own any by M E Atkinson.
Not because I'm not interested but because I'm really struggling to find copies with acceptable dustwrappers at reasonable prices.
I'm not knocking your purchases, Pete. I hope you enjoy reading them. It's just that I won't buy a book without a wrapper or with chunks of it missing. I suppose I'm too fussy.

Fair point John.
I thought this copy on ebay looked quite good considering its age for the price?
(even though 'nibbled by wasps'!!!???)

I've bought it, Pete. Hope there aren't any wasps still chewing the pages. 🐝

Hope the book is up to standard John!
I googled 'nibbled by wasps' just out of curiosity...

The book arrived this morning, Pete. It's a first edition from 1942 and the wasps have hardly nibbled it, just a few teeth marks on the back flap. The wrapper is acceptable and only slightly faded to the spine.
I have it on good authority from a reputable source that the author assumes that readers will know what has happened in the previous books so it seems they are best read in order. Good hunting, Pete.

Great news John.

Glad the wasps have not destroyed your dust wrapper too much!

I paid just £1.50 each for my two books and I immediately looked online to buy the earlier books.

They are available, but for much, much more than £1.50 a book - perhaps IceMaiden can root us out some more bargains please!

The Monster of Widgeon Weir arrived this morning which means I now have seven of the first eight Lockett titles.
I still want the second book though, Mystery Manor. I found a decent copy with a lovely wrapper a few weeks ago on Abebooks but when I bought it, the seller messaged me to say he had sold it months ago and had forgotten to delete it.
I've been advised the series is best read in order so I won't be getting very far with it just yet.

How annoying that the seller had forgotten to delete the book from the listing, John. I hope you're able to find another copy soon.
