5.0 out of 5 stars I don't think I will ever love a different book again like I did with this one.

I think this book is really good because it is like the Famous Five made modern with phones, etc. I love adventure books and usually I take my time and read books very slow but I just couldn't put this book down and I ended up finishing it within three days. I don't think I will ever love a different book again like I did with this one. IT IS SO AMAZING!!
Just got this book. With review like the above from Joyce I'm hoping for good things!
I'm sure one or two here have already got/read the book.

Thank you Tony - I was hoping Joyce's review wasn't just an over the top personal opinion! :D

I've recently begun Voyage of the Sparrowhawk by the same author, Pete. Interesting characters, an appealing scenario which promises adventures and discoveries, and a readable writing style. I love the cover, showing the two main child characters (and dogs) on a narrowboat out at sea!

I like the sound of that one. The library's only physical copy was due back in October 2020, so I doubt we will ever see it again but there's a CD audiobook which I may grab.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I have just finished this book, and can say in all honestly, it is one of the best children's books I have ever read. I just couldn't put it down - although I had to at times.

I need to get back to that book! My recent reading has mainly been done in my break at work, or while out and about. As my copy of Voyage of the Sparrowhawk is signed by the author (though I haven't actually met her), I don't want it to get knocked about in my bag so I've been reading other things. My bookmark tells me that I'm at the beginning of Chapter 9 - and I mean to resume the voyage as soon as I can! I'm glad you thought so highly of it, Nigel. :D

I've now finished Voyage of the Sparrowhawk and found it absorbing. It stirs the emotions and makes the reader feel totally immersed in the world of the characters. The Sparrowhawk itself appeals greatly as it seems so snug and cosy yet invites travel, adventure and discovery.

Yes, I adore narrowboats. I have been following the adventures of Kevin (CountryHouseGent), who sold everything after a divorce and bought Aslan, his narrowboat. He has a YouTube channel which he adds to weekly, and is well worth a watch. I have watched all his programmes since episode 1.

Travels by Narrowboat.

That sounds interesting, Nigel. I've been on canalside walks on recent trips to Oxford and Birmingham and it's fascinating looking at the brightly-painted narrowboats and imagining what it would be like to live on one.

Narrowboats on the Leed-Liverpool canal about 100 yards from where Enid used to live in Parbold, Lancashire - taken in 2011.

I grew up not many miles away from Parbold myself, and we often took walks on the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool canal and loved watching the narrowboats.
My parents have some DVD's of canal journeys and was watching one just the other day. I can't remember where it was but there was some lovely scenery in the bits that I saw and very restful watching the narrowboat move slowly along.

That's interesting Bertie, may I ask where? Although I am from north Liverpool, I used to go to lots of places around that area.

At first Wrightington, and then Haigh. Haigh's the one I most remember the walks - as I was a bit too young before - along the canal, or in the plantations near Haigh Hall. Pretty certain sometimes we had particularly long walks along the bank all the way to Parbold, and even to Newburgh. But it was just a matter of reaching there and immediately setting off back.
