Among the books I recall reading at school was Kim by Rudyard Kipling, A Kid For Two Fathings by Wolf Mankowitz and Ian Serraillier's The Silver Silver Sword that made a huge impact on me.

One story that I remember being read by the teacher at school was "The Destructors", by Graham Greene. It's the one about the gang of boys soon after the war who destroyed an old man's house. It seems a very strange one for a class of 8-9 year olds, which is what we were. (Mid-1970's.)
"Stig of the Dump" was another. Much more aimed at our age group!

Stig of the Dump is still a favourite of mine. I've read it every few years ever since I was about eight.
