A wonderful series! - Robert Hardy, Chris Timothy, Carol Drinkwater & Peter Davison were perfect in the roles, I much preferred that to the other TV and film adaptations of the books. Quite recently Chris & Peter made a very enjoyable series together, Great British Car Journeys, driving classic cars on vintage roads, they are such friends and still make a fabulous team.Chrissie777 wrote:Same here, I watched the TV series in the early 1980's on German TV, then bought the books.

You are most welcome!, they were good fun. I was interested to hear today more ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL is returning to our TV screens on Channel 5 this autumn after a 30 year absence, with Nicholas Ralph as Herriot and Anna Madeley as housekeeper Edna Hall. It'll have to go some to beat the 1978-1990 version with Chris Timothy and Robert Hardy, lets see what unfolds.

Re: James Herriot
Cheers for that, Boatbuilder, hadn't seen the full lineup - it'll be interesting to see what fabulous Nigel Havers makes of Gen. Ransom, and indeed Samuel West as Siegfried, we've long enjoyed the televised canal boat trips of "Tim & Pru" (Timothy West the Shakesperean actor and Prunella Scales, who I remember best in Fawlty Towers) his parents, but never come across him, didn't even know he was an actor!, but that makes sense with his thespian family background!

Christopher Timothy is such a nice actor, I doubt they can replace him by somebody coming even close to his charisma.floragord wrote:You are most welcome!, they were good fun. I remember the grumpy housekeeper Mrs. Hall.

Re: James Herriot
Samuel West has been in many high profile films and TV series so I'm surprised you've never come across him before. Some of his more notable roles have been in Mr. Selfridge and The Frankenstein Chronicles (TV) and the films Van Helsing - where he played Victor Frankenstein, and Notting Hill. He looks very much like his father.
Interestingly for Nicholas Ralph, (below) who will be playing James Herriot, it will be his screen debut.

He's lovely!, neither he or Peter Davison had changed a bit in their recent adventures on the road, a hard act to follow...

Re: James Herriot
I have just finished watching the first episode of the new series of 'All Creatures Great and Small' on Channel 5 and my initial thoughts are that it looks to have the making of a good series.

I watched it too, wondering if I would take to it after so enjoying the earlier one with Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy. I did like it and will continue to watch the rest of the series.
