Chrissie, you posted in this topic earlier in the year when it was being discussed, so looks like you just forgot about it, as I did until last night. ;)

I'd rather say it's long-term memory ;-).

Just noticed in the TV guide that the 1st episode of the new ACGAS adaption is repeated at 6PM on Sunday evening (Channel 5 of course). If like me you missed it and don't have the luxury of catch up, this is your chance to see it.

I've seen the whole of the new series of All Creatures Great and Small and found it just as delightful as the 1978-1980 one. Wonderful characters who touch the heart, a beautiful rural setting, plenty of period charm and entertaining storylines. It's always interesting watching series that revolve around a particular job. I like the insight into veterinary work in All Creatures Great and Small just as I enjoy the insight into midwifery in Call the Midwife, or police work in Line of Duty.

Boatbuilder wrote: 25 Jan 2020, 13:26 Samuel West has been in many high profile films and TV series so I'm surprised you've never come across him before. Some of his more notable roles have been in Mr. Selfridge and The Frankenstein Chronicles (TV) and the films Van Helsing - where he played Victor Frankenstein, and Notting Hill. He looks very much like his father.

Interestingly for Nicholas Ralph, (below) who will be playing James Herriot, it will be his screen debut.

I recently purchased the DVD which is now available in Australia and am two episodes in and I love it! I was quite cautious about this remake as it is one of my all time favourites, but I can’t fault this at all. It’s spot on to the period with all the detail, it follows the same storylines of the books, and the actors are so true to the books characters once again. It is also very visually appealing, and showcases the Dales superbly.

I understand that the second series will be out soon, if it hasn’t been delayed by the pandemic hopefully. Interesting to note that Samuel West is Prunella Scales’ son. I didn’t know this but did recognise him from Mr Selfridge. I can’t get used to Mrs Hall being so young as yet! I did love the character Mrs Hall from the previous original series. I wonder who will play Mrs Pumphrey in the second series?

We watched the first season earlier this year, but thought that it's not nearly as gripping as the original TV series with Timothy Christopher and Helen Drinkwater which we watched afterwards.

Hi Chrissie777, what were the differences for you? I think it was good that they had James speaking with a (native) Scottish accent in the new series. It took me a few episodes to get used to Tristan in the new series (I haven’t yet watched The Durrells) but I was endeared to him by the final episode. I love the way they finished the last episode too (spoiler alert) with them leaving The Drovers Arms together and the moon scene. The Christmas special was included on the DVD and I loved it as much as the original (this one a bit more prolonged on the romance of James and Helen if I recall) but I didn’t like the storyline with Helen at the church. I’ll have to check the book again but I wasn’t sure why they did that? I must watch the Christmas special with Christopher Timothy again to refresh my memory, and try not to critique (aka compare) it too much!

Hi Anne Gracie, for me Christopher Timothy and Helen Drinkwater had much more chemistry and radiance than the new James and Helen Herriot. Tristan was a lot funnier in the 1970's/1980's TV series. I also liked Siegfried (Robert Hardy) better than the new Siegfried.

I read the 4 books by James Herriot way back in the early 1980's and no longer have them.

Anyway, in case there would be a second season, we'll watch it. I liked the filming locations of the remake.

I'm really enjoying the new series. They make Yorkshire look extremely scenic and photogenic too!
