Perhaps you could go as an Enid Blyton character, Julie! A Faraway Tree character would be fun, e.g. Dame Washalot, the Saucepan Man or Silky!
... or as Enid Blyton herself?

Thank you, everyone. What a fantastic idea, Anita. I'd never given that a thought.

I may just contact the head myself nearer the time and put an idea forward. :)

Hope we get to see a photo if you do go dressed as a character, Julie!

Brilliant photos, Julie. I'm glad you're still visiting schools - and still relishing it. Its also a great place to get inspiration for other novels and stories - as you've said, you are picking up on what the children enjoy about your book and also what other books they enjoy - valuable information for the future.

Times have changed a lot! I noticed it with my nieces, born in the early 1990's - neither were that into Enid Blyton - although the older one enjoyed reading The Faraway Tree books and the younger one read a Famous Five book - once.

In the 1970's ENid Blyton was still very much the most popular children's author, at least in Britain. I remember we filled in a survey at school when I was about 10 asking about our favourite authors. Years later I discovered that this survey had revealed that ENid was by far the most popular. That would be in 1981. 8)

I'll warm me with your echoes

Ah, now that's interesting — I wonder what the results would have been in Australia? I don't know if Enid was quite as popular historically in Australia as in Britain, but she must have been pretty close, I think. My parents certainly grew up on her books — Mum always says there was nothing else to read in her school library! (I've never been sure if that was an exaggeration or not.) But by the late 1980s there were plenty of other popular children's authors around — Australian and overseas — and while Enid's books were still in print and very easy to come by, I never got the impression that she was everyone's "must-read" author in the way some others were by then. I suppose it's pretty natural for that trend to have continued.

That would be a great idea to dress up as a Blyton character for your World Book Day talk, Julie! :D Hope we get to see photos if you do.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Unfortunately some links stop working after a while as they're affected by forum/website updates, but the Stephen Isabirye thread is here:
