Has anyone else read Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome?
It's a really funny book about three men and a boat who embark on a trip up the Thames from Kingston to Oxford.
Although it was written in the nineteenth century, the observations and humour are still relevant today. I read it last year and thought it was excellent!

I have read Three Men on a Boat two or three times as well as listening to an audiobook version read by Ian Carmichael, which was brilliantly narrated. I have also got the sequel Three Men on the Bummel (I wonder what that means??) on my e-reader. I will get round to it eventually.

"On the bummel" means more or less an aimless ramble, I think, according to the book's intro. I'm not sure if it ever appeared in any dictionary.
"Diary of a Pilgimage" is on the same lines as well. I think it's the same characters (minus Montmorency), but I might be wrong - but they went to see the Passion Play at Oberammergau.
Three Men in a Boat was used as a textbook in the Kaiser's Germany. Jerome K Jerome
was loved in Germany and he returned the compliment in Three Men on the Bummel.
This book has a lovely piece about asking for a 3 mark Kussen (Kiss) from a pretty shop
assistant thinking that it meant cushion!
