The Enid Blyton Mince Pie Challenge!

Post by pete9012S »

How many times did Enid Blyton mention mince pies in the books? Which story mentioned them first and last?
Can we uncover twenty mince pie references from her hundreds of stories?
The challenge is on!

2. Five Go To Demon's Rocks:
There was great excitement after breakfast. Rugs - coats - night-clothes, the warmest that could be found - tins of cakes and mince-pies packed by Joan - sandwiches to eat on the way - books - games - as George said, anyone would think they were going away for a month!
‘What about having a few of Joan’s famous mince-pies too?’ said Dick, taking the lid off a big square tin. ‘Whew! Dozens!

3.The Children Of Cherry Tree Farm:
The children were going to spend Christmas at Cherry-Tree
Farm, for their parents were coming straight there. They thought it
would be marvellous to spend Christmas there, and have Aunt Bess's
home-made Christmas pudding and mince-pies, tarts, and fruit.
The farmhouse was decorated from top to bottom. Aunt Bess made six
enormous puddings and a hundred mince-pies, to say nothing of the biggest Christmas
cake that the children had ever seen.

4. The Six Bad Boys:
So Bob was the only one to creep down into the cellar. He carried a good many things — the little tree with its decorations and parcels. Two or three packets of food. A bag of mince-pies which he intended to warm up over the top of the oil-stove. Six bottles of ginger-beer — and a book to read while he was all alone in the cellar on Christmas Day.

6.Six Cousins At Mistletoe Farm:
Mrs. Longfield was helping Dorcas to make the first batch
of Christmas puddings and mincemeat that night, so, much to
the children's relief, she did not appear in the sitting-room for
more than a few minutes
This challenge is getting harder, better have a pie, and a cuppa to build up my energy!

7. The Christmas Book (surprisingly enough  )
"What about mince-pies?" said Peter. "We're going to have some, aren't we Mother?"
"Of course!" said his mother. "We couldn't have Christmas without mince-pies!"
"Well, you wouldn't have known the mince-pies of olden days," said Daddy. "They were pies really filled with minced meat, as their name tells you. The first minced-pies were filled with things like chopped-up hare, pheasant, capon, partridge and so on; then, later on, sweeter things were put into the pies, such as raisins, oranges, sugar and spices — but they were still called mince-pies, though there was no longer any minced meat in them."
"Nowadays mince-pies are very sweet to the taste," said Mother. "They are a sweet-course, not a meat-course. You must all remember to eat your pies in silence, so that you may have happiness for a month next year, each time you eat a mince-pie!"
"Another old custom," said Susan. "I like that one. I don't know what Peter did last year, about his 'happy months,' Mother, because he ate fourteen mince-pies, and there are only twelve months in a year."
"Oh, the thirteenth and fourteenth pies ran into next year!" said Peter, grinning. "I could do with a mince-pie this very minute!"
"Well, how funny — here comes one for you!" said Mother, as the door opened, and the maid came in carrying a tea-tray. Sure enough, on a dish were piled the first mince-pies, one for everybody. How Peter's eyes gleamed.
"Good!" he said. "Thank you, Mother. Just what I wanted. Now I'll be able to wish a happy month next year. That will take me to March!"

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Drat, I thought this was going to be a challenge to see how many mince pies we could eat between now and Christmas. I'm sure that could have been a lot!
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

And how many of those will you be eating, Pete? Or have you also bought yourself a pack (or two)?
