I still hold that if the shopkeeper had been a proper Cornishwoman herself (or rather, if Enid had known anything of real Cornish dialect), she'd have called them emmets.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Can't remember which book it is and I'm probably paraphrasing a bit, but he says that Uncle Quentin is a VIP, and Anne asks what that means. So he says something like "Very important person. What do you think it means - violet, indigo, purple? I expect they're the colours Uncle Quentin would go if he discovered someone was trying to steal his secrets!"

Well remembered. It is in Five on Kirrin Island Again.
They have a laugh at that, and George thinks Julian is so sensible and good-tempered.
James is mentioned a few paragraphs later!

Julian quick unhelpful wisdom in getting Richard to disguise himself by rubbing soot in his hair.
That had me laughing for a while. Much of his humour is very dry and relates to his leadership because he is the oldest. Also his teasing is often not seen as humour but taken seriously by adult critics.
