A Map of Peterswood

Let's not forget that Peterswood, like St. Mary Mead, in an imaginary village. Enid may have based parts of Peterswood on Bourne End, but not all of it I would imagine. She probably used her artistic licence to move buildings around and roads etc. So it is all imaginary.

So in my opinion, an imaginary map is the way to go. Not one from 1940's Bourne End.

Farwa, for what they're worth, here are my suggestions.

You could start with a modern map of the Bourne End streets. Later on, if you manage to access an old 6-inches-to-1-mile Ordnance Survey map of the area, you could check:

• 1) for any changes in street names since EB's time;
  2) for any new streets since the earlier map.

The basic layout of the Bourne End streets sketched, it should be easier for you to guess which street EB may be referring to in a particular passage in one of her FFO books.

The one building that you can fairly confidently mark on your map is the actual police station-cum-house of that earlier time.

Working out where to pencil in the various houses and other buildings will be a lot tougher, and you might even need to do a quick sketch map for each of the books. A sketch-map based on one particular book would also be much easier for people to evaluate.

Walking the streets that were there in the author's time would give you a good idea of the place as it was.

That's a lovely map, Pete. I have it in several non-fiction books on Miss Marple, but I think mine are in black & white. Great job to post it in this thread!!!

The layout of Peterswood is firmly planted in my mind as I imagine it is with many of us. All will be different, so I can't really see much point in designing one - except for one's own amusement, of course.

I love maps too! My friends thought I was odd when I was a teen because I used to study maps of Europe and the USA for ages. Then after years of marriage my husband admitted the same.

Hi deepeabee,

I'm a big fan of old maps and recently printed out two very different maps from Paris from the early and mid 17th century. I plan to put them all together, get a very large Poster frame and then hang the collage on our hallway wall.

I used to study world maps and memorise capital cities of all the countries when I was a teenager. I spent hours looking at atlas book( I still keep the book and it is rather tatty now).
