Re: Pronunciations
An Anglicised version of the Chateau Trotte Vieille? Google tends to throw up mostly Blyton results for Trotteville, can’t see any other people with the name yet.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

My 7 year-old granddaughter is now reading the complete series with her mother at bedtime. She thinks I am crazy to pronounce it Trotterville.

Re: Pronunciations
For me, the correct pronunciation of Fatty's surname is TROT-VILL.

Re: Pronunciations
I’m sure you are right, Eddie, that Fatty’s surname has two syllables. eg, how many syllables have the towns of Folkestone and Bournemouth.

Re: Pronunciations
Then again, the town near where I live - Lowestoft - is pronounced 'Low-er-stoft' not 'Lowe-stoft', although those who speak with a strong local dialect may sometimes pronounce it as the latter.

Re: Pronunciations
Of course, the clearest indication we get, that Fatty’s surname is pronounced with two syllables, is Twit’s note, warning him that he would get burgled. He may not have known how to spell Trotteville but he knew how to pronounce it which is why he left out the middle ‘e’.

To me that is proof that Enid meant it to be pronounced "Trot-vill".Barnard wrote: ↑04 Jul 2021, 16:09 Of course, the clearest indication we get, that Fatty’s surname is pronounced with two syllables, is Twit’s note, warning him that he would get burgled. Re: Pronunciations
I've always seen that as a deliberate touch of comedy, with the incorrect spelling reflecting the incorrect pronunciation of the name by Twit.Barnard wrote: ↑04 Jul 2021, 16:09Of course, the clearest indication we get, that Fatty’s surname is pronounced with two syllables, is Twit’s note, warning him that he would get burgled. Ah, but has she yet encountered Mandeville, vaudeville or Bonneville?
