I remember reading that letter a while ago, too. It is a lovely description of Bobs, I really enjoyed reading it again.

No, the fact that it is coloured pink is described as a bit of a 'printer's compromise' because obviously the colour associated with the British Empire is red, as you said, but apparently it would be hard to read words printed on a red background. So pink is the colour closest to red.Paul Austin wrote:Wasn't the British Empire crimson on maps?

Re: "The Making of an Empire"
Thanks for posting this playlet, Tony. It was a fascinating little read and I was particularly interested to see Rhodes pop up. A figure who has certainly had mixed responses in South Africa over time, anti-Rhodes sentiments really came to a head here earlier this year when the #RhodesMustFall movement was established. I guess I am wondering how legacy is viewed over in the UK and how history has painted him over there.

Yes it would be interesting to find out how he is viewed overseas. He is remembered here certainly, sometimes favourably and sometimes not! There are still some statues of him left standing.
I used to have a map of the world on my wall in the 70s and I remember Canada, Australia and the UK itself being pink, and some others.
